Off to forest school we go....

It was a bit windy at forest school today but Barbados class demonstrated some excellent teamwork and imagination today. They built a tree house, using sticks to hammer other sticks into the ground, they made a den and a bed from the evergreen cuttings. We had lots of scrumptious food being made in the mud kitchen and even some mud painting happening on the canvas.

We also wrapped wool to make jumpers for stick men to keep them warm and a few fishing rod were made too!

Fiji Attendance-opoly

Well done to Fiji class who reached their attendance target and won 'parachute time' on the attendance-opoly board! They had so much fun this afternoon! Keep up the good attendance Fiji!

Reading success in Reception

Thank you to all those parents who were able to make our first stay and read session. It was lovely to welcome so many of you into the classrooms to share in a love of reading with your child/grandchild.

Reading takes you on a journey and it was great to see so many children and their adults immersed in a range of fictional stories. We look forward to welcoming you to our next stay and read in February.

Further information will follow.

Carefully Crafted Coil Pots

In year 4 art for the past three weeks, we have been making coil pots. It is a skillful process and here's how we did it.

Firstly, we rolled out a piece of clay to an even thickness and cut it into a circle or oval shape to be the base. Then we rolled out four or five long coils to the same length (making sure they would fit around the base). Then came the most important part: scoring and slipping the clay and joining all the coils. After that we made decorative shapes to top the pot and smoothed the clay for a perfect finish.

In the second lesson, we primed the clay using a mix of pva glue and white paint. Also, we designed our colours and patterns.
In the final lesson, we painted the clay to our design!
Here are some of our final pieces.

Bowls for an artist!

In year 3 art, the children have spent the past three weeks making a bowl using a mould and gummed paper.

In the first lesson, they covered a cone (the mould) with tissue paper and attached it using masking tape. Then they covered the tissue paper with brown gummed tape. They had to wet the adhesive side and carefully apply two or three layers of gummed paper to take the shape of the cone.
The following lesson, when the gummed paper had dried, they pulled off the masking tape and wriggled the cone out of the tissue paper. It was now firm and had taken the shape of the cone. We trimmed the edge of the bowl neatly, and painted the whole outside white as a primer.
Lastly, they collected visual notes using artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Howard Hodgkin as inspiration for the design of their bowl then transferred designs onto their 3D bowl using brightly coloured paint.

Here are some of our finished bowls, aren't they spectacular?

Jamaica Forest School

After our Christmas break, the children in Jamaica Class got to head back outside to begin our forest school sessions. Once outside, we discovered that our forest had become bigger and we had lots of new areas to explore!

We began our session sitting altogether, listening to all of the sounds that we could hear around us, followed by a fun game of hide and seek. Then, we used Y shaped sticks to build teepees, this time covering them with evergreen branches and many children enjoyed the challenge of the balance rope to walk along. We also spent some time using binoculars to take a closer look at our forest school creatures, as well as having lots of fun swinging in the hammock! There was plenty of good teamwork observed throughout the afternoon which was so lovely to see.

It was a week of very exciting discoveries for Jamaica class. We are looking forward to our next forest school adventure!

A little house poem

Welcome to our poetry basket. This week in our poetry basket sessions Reception have learnt the poem "A little house". We learnt some lovely descriptive language to describe our house and the smoke coming out of the chimney and the accompanying actions.

Please enjoy our performance.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears in Nursery

This week Nursery have been focusing on 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We have made bears and enjoyed exploring porridge oats, scooping and pouring them into different sized bowls.

Treasure Hunt

Italy class won a treasure hunt for beating their attendance target. They really enjoyed finding the clues and then trying to work out the answers to get to the treasure at the end.

Mexico English lesson

In English, year 5 have been writing a non chronological report about Emperor Penguins. The children have looked at many things including; where they live, what they eat, how they survive the extreme conditions they live in, their unique attributes, and how the mother passes the egg to the father as soon as it has been laid so that she can go and get food.

As a class we tried to act like penguins and pass the 'egg' from one person to another just to see how difficult it was. All but 4 children managed to 'save the egg' from hitting the ice and freezing.

The children thoroughly enjoyed this task and it helped them with their writing when discussing the penguins special features and adaptations.
