Year 3 and 4 Learning Challenge

Here is the learning challenge for years 3 and 4 for Spring 2 and Summer 1.

	Compare and contrast two different artists’ work.	Produce a short story in another language.	Compare two types of dance.	Compare and contrast two historical events.

Year 3 Make Sensational Sandwiches

As part of our D+T topic, year 3 made and ate their very own delicious sandwiches. They have spent the past week learning about food groups and designing a healthy sandwiches which was followed by making and eating them today.

 Next week we will be using all of the work we have done to inspire us to write sandwich making instructions in our literacy lessons.

Kajus in Wales said "My sandwich was very healthy as i had food from every food group in it. I ate the whole thing."

Year 3 Class Parties

Year 3’s class parties shall be on Thursday. Children may bring in one item from the list below to share with their classmates

Sweets (please be aware that many children are unable to eat gelatin.) 

Please ensure no food has nuts in!

Walk to School Week 2019

Join the fun as we take part in Living Streets Five Day Walking Challenge (20th May- 25th May). We want to encourage as many children, parents and staff to walk to school.  Walking to school is one way of ensuring we are getting enough exercise. It  can also help make our streets safer and easier for children to walk to school everyday of the year. How many of you are up to the challenge?

Year 3 Reading Afternoon TODAY

Please be reminded that the Year 3 reading afternoon is being held for the second session today between 2.30-3.00pm.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to interact with your child in their classroom environment and explore the books we have in school for them to read. There will be books for the children to read with you along with other reading activities to complete however,  you are also welcome to bring a book from home. We hope these sessions will aim to improve children’s interest in reading for pleasure and assist you with challenging the children and their comprehension skills when reading at home.

Year 3 & 4 Christmas Concerts TICKETS

We have still got lots of tickets left over for our Year 3 & 4 Christmas concerts next week on Tuesday 11th December at 2pm and Wednesday 12th December at 9.30am.

Please be aware that tickets will be required to see the concerts so please ask your child's class teacher for another letter if you need it. We have extended the return date until Monday 10th December.

Abie Longstaff visited Mead!

Last week Abie Longstaff visited Mead Primary School. 

Some lucky pupils got to meet her for a Q&A session during their lunch break. Jolin said “I was so excited she is one of my favourite authors, I can’t believe she visited our school.” 

Abie ran an interactive workshop for year 3 and year 4 pupils in the afternoon. After explaining to pupils where she got her ideas from she allowed pupils to explore her treasure chest of props which help her whilst writing her stories. 

“I loved seeing all of the cool things she uses to help her write her stories,” Alexa said.

Pupils then got to plan a story together inspired by Abie Longstaff’s new Trap Door Mysteries. LKS2 worked together effectively to decide where the door was, how it opens, what's behind it and who wants to find it.

Year 3 Showcase

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 3 invite you all to our first exciting showcase of the academic year to share and celebrate what the children have been learning this term. Please feel free to get involved and join in with the activities that will be out on show.
This will be taking place next week on Tuesday 27th November in the afternoon.

Doors open in the office at 2.00pm and will close at 2.50pm.
You can take your child home with you after you have finished looking round the showcase but please let your child's class teacher know. Children in other classes will be need to be collected at the normal home time from the playground.

Year 3 and 4 Road Safety

On Tuesday the 13th of November, the year 3 and 4 classes were lucky enough to attend a road safety workshop in the afternoon. This was a fast paced, informative and entertaining show that included singing, dancing and funny acting. This show highlighted the importance of road safety to the students, including topics such as:

• Wearing a helmet when riding a bike or scooter. 
• Stopping and ensuring that you check both directions of traffic before crossing 
• Always cross the road with care. 
• Being safe on and around roads. 

The students thoroughly enjoyed the show and took away a lot of information.

We encourage you to practice your spellings by putting these words into sentences on the back of your spelling sheet. Merits will be awarded for extra effort!

The test for these spellings will be on Friday 9th November.

This weeks star writer in Northern Ireland is Lena, who wrote a fantastic introduction for her instructions, she used a rhetorical question and list sentence which enticed her reader to engage with the instructions.

Dear Parent/Carer

Mead Primary School are delighted to invite parents with children in Years 3 and 4 to a reading support session, starting at 2:30pm in the hall, on Friday 12th October.


This will be a chance for teachers to share ideas and show how to effectively support your child at home with their reading. We will also be providing some guidance on how to question and develop your child’s comprehension skills.

Northern Ireland became pizza chefs!

Northern Ireland class LOVED visiting a new restaurant in Romford today, MOD Pizza!

When we arrived, the children were all allowed to choose their own drink from the machines.

"I loved the fresh raspberry lemonade" Harry 

The children enjoyed a tour of the restaurant where they were able to go behind the scenes into the kitchen and even went into the big walk in fridge-freezers and got to ask lots of questions. “I couldn’t believe how cold the walk in fridge was!” Macie. 

They were shown the process of how the pizzas were made and then were able to make their own! After using a special machine to roll out the dough, the children spread on their base sauce and picked their own toppings to make their pizzas to their own tastes. Some children were very adventurous with their choices. "I had olives and artichokes on my pizza as I love trying new food!” Daniella. Others got creative with the design of their pizzas Ivan created a smiley face with his. 

Once they were cooked, we were all able to enjoy our creations! There were big smiles all round. 

The children will be using what they have learnt in the restaurant with their instructional writing in literacy.

Parents, if you take the letter given out to the children and their mini pizza box back to the restaurant, children will receive another free pizza when an adult's is bought.

Forest School Session 3

Year 3 were ready and raring to go today! It’s fantastic to see the children excited and turning up with a plan for their time when they arrive at forest school. 

 Digging, creating in the mud kitchen, making wooden mobiles, developing den areas and relaxing in the hammock were a few of activities taking place in the woods today. 

Some amazing ground pictures were also created by some children, whilst others enjoyed looking for and discovering mini beasts!

Forest School will not be on next week but will resume the following week.

Scotland Star Writer

This week in Year 3 we have been writing about descriptive settings. Felicity in Scotland Class has produced an excellent descriptive setting about the beach in her Big Write. Well done Felicity keep up the fantastic work!

Forest School Session 2

Imaginations were freely expressed in the woods yesterday. Mud kitchen creations took place, dens were built, birds were spotted and treasures found. The children supported each other to ensure all were included as they found mini beasts, climbed trees and described the forest layers to each other. A busy time was had by all. 

A new group starts Forest School!

And we’re back! It was a bit of a windy start to forest school but it gave us the opportunity to see what we could catch in our nets. Lots of exploring, climbing, creating in small and big ways took place today. The children all had fun and were very excited for next week - a great first session.

Volunteers Needed for Forest School

We are looking for volunteers to help run our Forest School programme with the year 3 children.
You will be working with a trained Forest School practitioner, supporting and helping a group of 15 children in the forest area of our school. You will need to be available every Wednesday afternoon between 12.30-2.30pm as this is when the sessions take place. We are looking for ideally 2-3 volunteers to be able start as of next week (Wednesday 18th September).
