England Class had a great time at the library. We chose some brilliant books and had some time to read with our friends.

 This week the year 2 classes visited Harold Hill library.

 We connected with our local library and borrowed books for  the children to enjoy.

Palau and New Zealand visit the library!

Today New Zealand and Palau classes visited Harold Hill library. We got the chance to take a tour of the children's library, and listen to a story. Children then chose a book, which they have brought back to school to enjoy. Everybody set a great example for Mead, and had a fantastic time!

Y3 Library Visits

Children in Year 3 visited Harold Hill Library last week. 

It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to explore and read some of the lovely different books the library offers. 

The children were shown how to find books by using the last letter of the authors surname, and looking alphabetically across the shelves. 

We found that many pupils were interested in the non-fiction books and selected one to bring back to school to read and share in class.

'I loved listening to the story the librarian read to us. It was called Rudey's Windy Christmas and it was very funny.' - Wadi

Children all took home a membership letter. If you are interested, please complete the letter & take it into the library for a free membership! They have an amazing selection of children's books and there is now no longer a fine for late returned books. Once you have a membership, you can use any of the Havering libraries in the local area. 

Weekly Newsletter-29th November 2019

Dear Parents,
Time seems to be flying by and Christmas preparations are well on their way in school. I can hear the children rehearsing from my room, the singing is beautiful and we are looking forward to sharing our performances with you.

We are aware that one of our families is having a very hard time. All the children have come through Mead, the youngest is still here, and mum is very poorly and in need of a specialised operation. We have witnessed in the past how supportive the local community is and therefore have decided to collect donations on Christmas jumper day (Friday 13th December) and at our Christmas events to support the family.

Diary Dates
Monday 2nd December -Wales class are visiting the local library today and Mexico class will be spending the afternoon at The Queen’s Theatre. Some of our nursery children will be going to the post box and Year 6 pupils will spend the afternoon on the Mead Farm. Our choir will be singing at the Christmas Lights Switch on at Hilldene shopping centre after school.
Tuesday 3rd December-Some year 4 pupils will be attending a Public Speaking workshop at Mead while some more of our nursery children will be going to a post box. Today it’s year 5’s turn to spend the afternoon on the farm. Parents/carers of our year 3 pupils are invited into school between 14:00 and 15:00 for their showcase. After school our netball team will be taking on a team from Broadford-Good luck Guys!
Wednesday 4th December-Some of our pupils will be going with Miss Calitz to take part in a bowling competition and Scotland and N. Ireland classes will be visiting the local library. Year 3 pupils will be visiting the Mead farm this afternoon. Parents/carers of our year 4 pupils are invited into school between 14:00 and 15:00 for their showcase.
Thursday 5th December-We are holding a coffee morning for parents of our SEN pupils between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning and parents/carers of our year 6 pupils are invited into school between 14:00 and 15:00 for their showcase
Friday 6th December- Reception parents/carers are invited into school for a stay and play session between 8:30 and 9:00. Two of our year 4 classes will be attending Public Speaking workshops in school.

Please be reminded to top up your child’s catering account as we cannot provide dinners for pupils whose accounts exceed a debt of £10.
Havering catering Service now provide a breakfast club for Mead pupils. For £1.50 your child can have a bacon or sausage sandwich or beans on toast with cereal or toast or fresh fruit or yoghurt plus a drink.
We will also have speciality days when other items such as pancakes and muffins will be available.
In order for you to book a place you will need to deposit the money in advance in your Squid account.

Please do not send your child to school to attend breakfast club if there are no funds in your account as they will not be admitted.


Attendance Update
Well done to Mexico class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 96.2% . Wales had the highest attendance in LKS2 at 96.4% and Egypt had the highest attendance in KS1 and overall at 97.7% . Well done to them! The overall attendance was slightly down on last week but still an improvement on previous weeks at 95.3%.

Research at the library

Today, Year 6 had the opportunity of visiting the library to research about a South American country in preparation for writing a non-chronological report about it in Literacy next week.

They were incredibly well-behaved and enjoyed looking at the books and researching facts using the computers. Rowan said "I really enjoyed it as I found lots of facts."

Evita agreed and said "It was amazing as I got to look at lots of different books. I learn so many more things about Brazil."

Dear Parents,

Harvest Festival
We are holding our Harvest Festival assembly on Tuesday 29th October. This year, once again we are going to give your donations to the Harold Hill Foodbank who do such a wonderful job helping local residents in times of need.
We would therefore be grateful if children could start bringing in donations from Monday 14th October. The Foodbank have specifically asked for non-perishable items as they cannot pre determine when the food will be distributed.

Year 6 Parents - 31st October 2019
The deadline for applying for secondary school places is fast approaching. Please ensure that you have registered for an online account and applied for a secondary place before this date. If you require any assistance please come into the office and see Mrs Kinchella.

County Lines Talk - Tuesday 15th October @ Broadford School-6:30pm
The Learning Federation is hosting a presentation evening from Peter Wilson from the Metropolitan Police (Trident), regarding Child Criminal Exploitations and County Lines within Havering. This important information will assist with equipping members of the public and parents to be vigilant in supporting all children / young people regardless as to where they live. These talks have been very well received and are highly recommended for parents.

School Photographer
Our new school photographer Carmel Jones will be in school on Tuesday 15th October for individual and family photographs. Make sure that your hair is brushed and teeth are clean you'll be ready for your close up.

If you would like a family photograph with siblings who do not, as yet, attend school please come to the KS2 hall between 8:00am and 9:00am. If you want siblings who attend school to have their photograph taken together please ensure you complete the form, sent home earlier this week, and return it to school.

Monday 14th October- Some of our pupils will be joining a LAMDA session in the afternoon and we are looking forward to welcoming parents/carers for the first of our Parent Consultation meetings after school.

Tuesday 15th October- Individual pupil photographs. During the afternoon year 3/4 pupils will be watching a Road Safety production and our Rugby teams will be attending a tournament at Draper’s Brookside. After school we look forward to welcoming parents/carers to the 2nd of our Parent Consultation meetings. There will be a book fair in the reception area ,the proceeds of which will help us purchase some books for our proposed new library.

Thursday 17th October Year 5 be attending a circus workshop in school. Egypt class will spend the afternoon at the local Fire Station.

Friday 18th October- Year 3 trip to Bedford Park

Autumn Term Parent Consultation Evening - Monday 14th & Tuesday 15th October
We are looking forward to welcoming all parents on Monday and Tuesday of next week for parent consultation meetings. You will have the opportunity to meet your child’s new class teacher and find out how they have settled so far this year. The teachers will also explain the expectations for the end of the year for your child.
Our Year 6 prefects will also be on hand to show you to the hall and asking parents to complete our annual parent survey.
Hopefully everyone now has an appointment time-if you haven’t please feel free to speak to your child’s class teacher to find a mutually convenient time

Well done to Brazil class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 99.1% which they share with Madagascar class in KS1-both classes had just one pupil absent all week-Hopefully they’ll have 100% attendance next week and win their cupcake party . Greece had the highest attendance in years 3 &4. The overall attendance was disappointing at only 94.4% which is below our target!.

Holidays
A number of holiday forms have been handed into school ,however I need to inform you that in line with local authority procedures, we will only authorise holidays in very exceptional circumstances.

Weekly Newsletter-Friday 12th July 2019

Dear Parents,

Pupils will be bringing their End of Year report home today and there will be an opportunity for you to discuss any issues arising after school on Monday.

I have been made aware that there are still underlying problems in the playground between some parents and want to reiterate that:

I will NOT tolerate inappropriate behaviour on the school site. It is totally unacceptable for our children to witness adults intimidating each other, swearing, arguing or fighting and in order to ensure our children are safe I will not hesitate to ban adults or call the police to attend, as I see necessary.

Please be reminded smoking is prohibited on the school site-this includes vaping


SQUID PAYMENTS
Despite reminders being sent out and telephone calls being made there continues to be outstanding amounts owed on SQUID accounts for school dinners (Some of these are year 6 pupils who will be leaving next week). If parents don’t pay, their debt will have to be paid to Havering Catering service from the school’s budget. As I’m sure you can appreciate this will inevitably impact on the resources we are able to buy for the children. It is with regret that I have to inform you that:

WE WILL NOT BE PROVIDING SCHOOL DINNERS FOR PUPILS WHO HAVE A DEBT OF £10 OR MORE.


Time flies, we are nearly at the end of this academic year and we come to that time when we sadly have to say goodbye to some staff members:
Miss Woodgate is leaving us as she is moving abroad.
Miss James, Miss Evans and Miss Thomas are relocating to other areas.
Needless to say they will all be missed and they leave Mead with our very best wishes for the future.
On a positive note we are looking forward to welcoming Mr Cash, Mrs Boxall and Miss Bloom who will be joining the teaching staff next year and we are delighted that, on completion of their training, Miss Hinchliffe, Miss Smith, Miss Cunningham and Miss Reid are staying with us.
Miss Highton will not be classroom based next term as she has taken on the interim Assistant Headteacher role responsible for curriculum and KS2.

Thank you for your support on Thursday-to date we have raised £1200 which will be shared equally to support Miss Pountney's voluntary trip to help train teachers in Laos and to help with the upkeep of Mead Farm

Monday 15th July -We say goodbye to our goats, sheep and pony as they are going on their holiday to Wellgate Farm for the next 6 weeks. Parents/carers are invited to come into school between 15:00 and 16:30 if they wish to discuss their child’s school report.

Tuesday 16th July-LAMDA pupils will be taking their final exams today. Class changeover afternoon-your children will be meeting their new teacher they will be dismissed by their new teacher (so you can put a face to the name) in their normal playgrounds.

Wednesday 17th July-Go Bonkers Day-All pupils will have a session on the inflatables today.

Thursday 18th July - Mr Robinson and Mr Stanbridge have organised a staff v. pupils football match at lunchtime today. Parents/carers of year 1 pupils are invited into school at 14:30 for a short concert this afternoon. Year 6 slip and slide afternoon-Look out for the photos on the blog.

Dear Parents,

We come to the end of what has been another very busy half term at Mead. Time for us all, Staff and children alike, to recharge our batteries and hopefully come back to school refreshed and ready for whatever challenges are presented to us.

Parents, we seem to be running out of spare clothing in KS1- if your child comes home in any items of school spare clothes for whatever reason please ensure they are returned.

I have had numerous complaints from parents/carers this week about adults swearing on the school site-Please refrain from using foul/abusive language in proximity to our children-it is amazing how quickly they pick up inappropriate language.

Dear Parents,

Parents/carers please be aware -we cannot be held responsible for accidents on our playground equipment before and after school. During the day pupils in the playground are supervised by school staff when using outside equipment, but once they are in your care they become your responsibility.

Monday 11th February- Some of our pupils will be representing Mead at the Stratford Music Festival. Session 4 of the Mary Poppins workshop for some of our year 4 pupils will take place in the afternoon

Tuesday 12th February-Our reception parents are invited into school between 8:30 and 9:00 to read with their children. In the afternoon Kenya class will be visiting Hilldene Library whilst our Year 5 and 6 pupils attend a Road Safety production in school.

Wednesday 13th February- Year 2 pupils will be attending a sculpture workshop in school. Our Reception and year 1 pupils will be taking part in a Dental Health Programme. Well done to Argentina and Canada classes who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 and overall at 98.3%. The other attendance scores were very disappointing -Italy had the highest attendance in LKS2 at 93% and New Zealand had the highest attendance in KS1 at 92.5%. The overall attendance was very disappointing at only 91.4% which is well below our target! Fingers crossed we can improve on this next week.
REMEMBER
Having a good education is important to ensure that your children have the best opportunities in their adult life. They only get one chance at school, and your child’s future may be affected by not attending school regularly.

If children do not attend school regularly they may:

• Struggle to keep up with school work. In a busy school day it is difficult for schools to find the extra time to help a child catch up.

• Miss out on the social side of school life. Poor attendance can affect children’s ability to make and keep friendships; a vital part of growing up.

Setting good attendance patterns from an early age, from nursery through primary school will also help your child later on in their life. Children who have a poor school attendance record may have less chance of securing a job when they are adults.

Madagascar visit the library

Madagascar class enjoyed visiting Harold Hill library last week.

They were shown around the children's section of the library and the librarian demonstrated to the children how easy it is to borrow books.  The children listened to a story and were allowed to each  take a book back to class to enjoy.

Reading is an essential part of the children's development and we have been discussing how important it is to read regularly.

'The library is organised into fiction and non-fiction books' said Ruby.

I like reading stories and I picked a story because I liked the front cover' said Billy.

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year

I would like to wish a happy New Year to you all and I hope that you all enjoyed a relaxing and restful break. This year we want all of our children to be stronger, braver and kinder. If they achieve all this they will be unstoppable and this will be their best year yet! Together we can help our pupils achieve this. I am very excited about, what I am sure will be an amazing 2019.

We are welcoming some new staff members this term. Mr Elliott is the new teacher in Germany class and we are looking forward to being joined by two additional support staff member Mrs Ahmed and Miss Knight who will be joining us in the near future.

We are also welcoming 2 new additions to our farm this year. Our goats have been joined by 2 very friendly sheep - Hazel and Jimmy. Hazel is still only very young and is black and white. Jimmy is older and all white. We will have farm open days again this term so you can get to meet them . In the meantime we will post pictures of them on the blog and on our facebook page.

School Census
In the month of January we complete the school census which determines the amount of funding the school receives.

For every pupil who is eligible for Free School Meals, our school receives funding of £1,300 per year for six years. Even KS1 children who receive Universal Free School Meals may still be eligible for this funding. If your child is eligible for this funding you would also receive:

• £40 voucher per child, per year to assist with the cost of school uniform redeemable at Premier Schoolwear.

• Assistance with contributions towards school trips and residential visits.

• After school clubs can continue to be free of charge. 

If you are receipt of one of the following you are eligible. Please visit the school office and see Mrs Parker.

• Income Support
• Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• Income related employment and support allowance
• Support under part VI of the Immigration & Asylum Act 1999
• Child Tax Credit ( provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and whose annual income (as assessed by the Revenue and Customs) does not exceed £16,190.

Havering Catering Services are putting on a special menu on 17th January (Census Day) as our funding is also determined by the uptake of school meals on that day-See below

In ‘Join up January’ – good news from libraries!
Havering Library Service no longer charge children library fines for books taken out on their tickets and as it’s ‘Join up January’ we hope this will encourage you to join your child to your local library and take advantage of all the thousands of free story books, factual books and e-books that it offers. Reading for pleasure is an important part of your child’s development and helps them to develop socially, cognitively and emotionally.

Pupil Jobs and Homework Expectations

As it is a new year we thought it would be a good time to revisit our pupil, parents and staff expectations.

Pupils are expected to:

1. Ensure that our children arrive on time for school and ready to learn:

We will ensure that our staff are professional, approachable and focused on making sure that every child in their care achieves their full potential. Working together we can continue to deliver outstanding results for our pupils so that they have every chance of going on to succeed at the next stage of their education.

All pupils are expected to continue their learning at home. For children in years 1-6 there are three core elements for this:

• Pupils must read every night 15 mins (this may involve an adult reading them a bedtime story)
• Pupils must practise their spellings for 15 mins ready for the test on Friday
• Pupils must practise their times tables for 15 mins a night

In addition to this we have a Homework Bingo/Learning Challenge which is set by every Year group. This helps to give ideas on how the children can enrich their learning by looking at specific paintings, composers, poems and significant people. We would anticipate that it takes around 4-6 weeks for your child to complete the activities. They choose to do this and can take on as many elements as they wish.

Don’t forget that you can contact staff using the shared mailboxes. They are checked daily and can be used to ask questions, pass on information or check details:

Reception Admissions September 2019
If your child is looking to join our school in Reception 2019 it is vital that you get your application completed by 15th January or it is likely you will miss out. YOU MUST APPLY! Attending our Nursery will have no impact on your application. Many parents mistakenly believe that a place in the Nursery = a place in Reception… it doesn’t!

Havering Catering Services
Week beginning 8th January is week 1 on the havering catering Services menu. All meals are served with unlimited salad and vegetables and cost £2.20.

Attendance Update
Well done to Chile class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 100% . Wales and Greece shared the highest attendance in LKS2 at 97.8% and Egypt had the highest attendance in KS1 at 100%. Well done to them!. The overall attendance has greatly improved (and is actually above our target) at 96.5%.

A massive well done to Chile and Egypt classes your fantastic effort will be rewarded with a cupcake party

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of regular attendance:

• Attendance has a direct link to attainment. If a child is not in school regularly they are not fully accessing the curriculum and learning opportunities available to them.

• Achieving at school builds a child’s self-esteem, as well as enhancing their future prospects.

• Attending school and being part of the school’s community gives a child a sense of belonging and promotes their social development.

• Spending time with school staff teaches a child about society’s expectations with regards to behaviour and how to communicate with people in authority preparing them for adult life.

• Attending school gives a child the opportunity to experience positive separation from their parent(s)/carer(s), which builds their confidence and resistance

Northern Ireland visited Harold Hill Library

Earlier this week Northern Ireland visited the Harold Hill library. They thoroughly enjoyed the visit where they learnt how to use the library and then listed to a funny Christmas story called 'Rudey's Windy Christmas' by Helen Baugh and Ben Mantle. 

Kezrae said “The story was so funny!”

Ivan loved how he could see all the new books and choose one that interested him. 

Northern Ireland are now enjoying reading their books in class and looking forward to visiting the library again in the new year.

Scotland Class Visits Harold Hill Library

Scotland class enjoyed visiting Harold Hill library today! We were shown the sections of books around the children's area and were shown how to find book by its author.
The children then got to listen to and join in with a very funny story read by the librarian, called 'Rudey's Windy Christmas' by Helen Baugh and Ben Mantle.

'I liked how the sections were organised in alphabetical order so I could easily find the book I wanted,' Felicity.

'I liked looking at all the books as we don't have as many in school,' Charly

'I thought the story was really funny,' Ellie-Mae

Weekly Newsletter- 16th November 2018

Dear Parents,

It was fantastic to see the children all dressed in blue on Monday in recognition of the start of anti-bullying week and I can tell from the assemblies, held at the end of the day, some valuable lessons were learned.

Thank you to the parents who came into school for the Early years coffee morning in support of Children in Need. I must say the donated cakes/biscuits were delicious.

Punctuality
I am very disappointed that so many children are arriving at school late (after 8:45). Pupils arriving late often feel uncomfortable walking into class after lessons have begun and it is very disruptive for the rest of the class. I will be monitoring this carefully over the next few weeks as it needs to improve.

Also, please be reminded EYFS/KS1 children should be collected from school at 3:00pm and KS2 children at 3:10pm. We seem to have an ever increasing number of children waiting in reception at the end of the day for parents/siblings who are late collecting them. It is NOT acceptable for the children to have to wait for their brothers and sisters from secondary schools to collect them and if this continues I will have no choice other than referring to external agencies.

Diary Dates

Monday 19th November-Some potential new reception parents will be coming to have a look at our school between 10:00 and 10:30. During the afternoon some of our year 4 pupils will be attending Draper’s Brookside Primary school for a Mary Poppins history session.

Tuesday 20th November- Greece class will be going to MOD Pizza in the morning and Year 4 will have their second West Ham Health programme session in the afternoon. After school our netball team will be taking on a team from Hilldene-Good luck Meadies!

Wednesday 21st November -Some of our year 3 children will be attending a Forest School session during the afternoon while our year 2 Spinebreakers will be going to browse the books at Hilldene Library.

Thursday 22nd November -During the morning our KS1 children will be watching the pantomime Aladdin in school.

Friday 23rd November -Parents of our year 1 pupils are invited into school for their showcase between 14:00 and 15:00

Weekly Newsletter- 2nd November 2018

Dear Parents,
I hope you have all had a good week’s break, spending time with family and friends, and that everyone is ready for what promises to be a very busy time as we approach the Christmas period.


Week beginning 12th November is anti-bullying week and the theme is 'Choose respect'.

It was really pleasing to see in the surveys, completed at the recent parent meetings, that the overwhelming majority of you indicated that you 'strongly agree' we deal well with bullying. However, for this to continue to be the case we do need to identify different forms of bullying and how it should be dealt with/can be prevented.

Under this theme we will be encouraging children and young people to think about what respect means to them, what it feels like to be respected and how they show respect to others. Overall, we will be exploring how respect for others can continue to build an anti-bullying culture in our school.

Locally schools are wearing blue next Friday 9th November to show their support for this campaign. However we intend commemorating Armistice Day on Friday, so are requesting that pupils come to school wearing blue on Monday 12th November. During the day pupils will learn about different forms of bullying and how they can be prevented and at the end of the day they will have the opportunity to share their work in assemblies.

Diary Dates
Tuesday 6th November-Parents/carers of Reception children are invited into school between 8:30 and 9:00 for a reading session with their child. During the afternoon representatives from West Ham united will be in school to deliver the first of 6 Health Programmes with our year 4 classes. After school our netball team have a match against a team from Drapers Brookside Junior School.

Wednesday 7th November- Pudsey is in school selling Children in Need merchandise. Year 2 Spinebreakers are going to Hilldene Library and some year 3 pupils will be attending Forest Schools in the afternoon. Year 6 parents are invited into school between 14:30 and 15:00 for a reading session with their children

Thursday 8th November-Year 3 attending a Hindu workshop in school. Some of our older children are representing Mead in a Tag Rugby competition at Drapers Brookside Junior School

Dear Parents,

All of our reception and nursery children are now in school and have settled brilliantly. We are thrilled that they are part of our school community and we hope that pupils and their families feel at home here at Mead already.

A massive thank you to parents of our Reception pupils for attending the Macmillan coffee morning and for your contribution of cakes and donations for such a worthy cause.

Please be reminded that for security reasons parents/carers are not allowed in the school building without first reporting to reception. I am concerned that a few parents have tried to come through the pupil doors in the morning to speak to staff (when they are in class working with children). We are happy to pass messages on and Teachers do come out with the children at the end of the day and are happy to talk to you then. Alternatively you can phone and make an appointment for a meeting.

Tuesday 2nd October- In the morning Scotland class will attend a pizza workshop at MOD pizza in Romford.

Wednesday 3rd October -Reception parents are invited into school for a stay and read session from 8:30-9;00. This is followed by a reception phonics meeting for parents in our KS1 hall from 9:00-9:30. N.Ireland class’ turn to attend a pizza workshop at MOD pizza in Romford. Between 10:00 and 10:30 Mrs Pidgeon will be showing potential parents around our reception area and during the afternoon our Year 1 Spinebreakers and some of our Year 2 Spinebreakers will be visiting Hilldene Library.

Thursday 4th October-CENSUS DAY. It is helpful if all pupils opt for a school dinner today as our funding for next year is determined by the uptake of school dinners. Finally Wales class’ turn to attend a pizza workshop at MOD pizza in Romford. Some of our year 6 pupils will be cycling with Phil, while our year 2 Spinebreakers will be going to Waterstones in Romford. The Freshwater Theatre company are in school leading a drama workshop for our year 2 pupils and our football team will be playing Brookside at Mead after school.

LFPA Firework Extravaganza

The Learning Federation Parents’ Association are once again busy planning this year’s firework display which will take place on Friday 2nd November 2018 at Broadford Primary School, 5.30pm-8.30pm. Last year we welcomed over 1200 guests and were overwhelmed at the positive feedback from parents and visitors - we sold out of tickets in advance.

There will be live music featuring Charlie Dillon from ITV’s The Voice Kids, trapeze artists, a DJ, the Slime Tub Zone, BBQ, firework crafting zone, UV face painting and much, much more.

It’s important for us to ensure members of the school community are given first preference and a discount on tickets. Early Bird discount tickets​ are available until Friday 5th October 2018​ by completing the letter/ticket application form which was sent home to all parents last week. If you need another copy of the letter/form please contact the school office or email romfordfireworks@mail.com.

Family tickets cost £14 each (2 adults, 2 children)

Child tickets cost £4 each (under the age of 14 - under 3’s are free)

Well done to Mexico class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 96.3% . Congratulations to N.Ireland who had the highest attendance in LKS2 and overall at 100%. They have earned themselves a cupcake party for their effort. New Zealand had the highest attendance in KS1 at 97.4%. Well done to them!. The overall attendance was disappointing at 94.6% below that of previous weeks and below our target!
