Year 2 Time Travellers!

Last week Freshwater Theatre Company visited us and we travelled back in time through drama.

The children had fun engaging in this historical workshop which looked at the life and times of two intrepid explorers; recreating the events of their journeys, and discovering the many similarities between these two men.  The journey started from Genoa, Italy with the birth of Christopher Columbus then we explored his voyages and discoveries heading west across the ocean and then launching into space in Apollo 11 and looking at how Neil Armstrong explored space.

The children started as time travelling apprentices and ended as masters!

Well done to Year 2!

Dear Palau Class

The children in Kenya class got a wonderful surprise today.  Last year, when the children were in Palau class, they wrote to Queen Elizabeth II after learning all about her.  To our surprise and delight a letter arrived at Mead over the summer holidays from the Queen's Lady-in-Waiting thanking them for their letters and enclosing some very interesting information.  The children were all given a copy of the letter to take home and treasure. Given the recent sad news it was very special for the children to receive such a lovely letter at this time.

Book request

Parents/Carers To continue to promote a love of reading we will be having a lending library situated within our EYFS/KS1 playground in the Autumn term. Pupils and parents will be encouraged to "take a book, leave a book". To help get this up and running we are kindly asking for your help! If your child has any unwanted or duplicate books, or any books they have now grown out of and no longer read, we are asking that these be donated to our lending library for another child to cherish and love. We are asking for any books suitable for 4-7year olds please. If you are able to donate any books, please send them into school with your child or hand them to myself (Miss Edwards), Mrs Pidgeon or Miss Spinks who is in KS2. Many thanks

Year One's Marvelous Medicines

In history, the children have been learning about Mary Seacole, a hero from the past. She was born in Jamaica and helped her mother before travelling the world as a nurse. Mary Seacole looked after soldiers in the Crimean war by creating herbal medicines. Just like Mary Seacole, the children made medicines using lemon, ginger, thyme, mint and honey. The children were excited to try their medicine and were proud of the medicine they created. Amirah said "I want to make some medicine for Mummy at home because she's not feeling well".

Cultural week in Palau Class

This week the children in Palau have been learning all about their country.  They discovered that you can swim with jellyfish in Jellyfish Lake - and they won't sting you!  They also found out about other animals that live in the tropical climate.  Here is some of their wonderful artwork depicting those animals:

On your marks, get set ....... GO

The sun came out for year one's sports day this week.  The children from Palau, Australia and New Zealand had a wonderful time competing against each other in lots of fun activities, such as the egg and spoon race, beanbag throwing competition, dressing the teacher race, the sack race and the relay running race.  As you can see from the pictures below a brilliant time was had by all.  And the winning class was..............Australia.  Well done to them!
