Letter to parents and guardians: when you should book a coronavirus test for your child

Dear parents and guardians,

This is an important letter to share some information on how we can work together to make sure we can continue to give children and young people the best education in the safest way possible.

One important part of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of pupils, students, parents and our communities is testing for coronavirus. We all have a duty to make sure that the right people have access to get tested at the right time. Every time a test is used inappropriately, a person with COVID-19 symptoms may miss out on getting tested.

Therefore, I ask that you all follow these principles:

you should only book a test if your child has any of these 3 coronavirus symptoms:
a high temperature: any new high temperature where your child feels hot to touch on their chest or back (you do not need to measure the temperature)
a new continuous cough: coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
a loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste: a noticeable loss of smell or taste or things smell and taste different to normal
your child does not need a test if they have a runny nose, are sneezing or feeling unwell but do not have a temperature, cough or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste because these are not normally symptoms of coronavirus
if you are unsure about whether to get a test, please check the official list of symptoms on the NHS website, which is reviewed regularly
only the person with symptoms should get a test. You do not need to get a test for anyone else in the household unless they also have any of the 3 symptoms listed above. All members of the household need to self-isolate whilst waiting for the test result
if the person with symptoms’ test comes back positive, other members of their household should continue self-isolating for 14 days and only get a test if they develop coronavirus symptoms
if a pupil or student in a class or bubble tests positive for coronavirus, anyone who is advised to self-isolate does not require a test unless they subsequently develop symptoms.

No one else in the same class or bubble as the symptomatic person needs to take any action unless advised by the school or college. Schools and colleges have detailed guidance and access to a Department for Education and Public Health England helpline for advice and support.

Contacts of a person who has tested positive must follow the guidance carefully and in full, which means they must stay at home for 14 days. This is because it can take several days following contact with an infected person before an individual develops symptoms or the virus can be detected. Students should only book a test if they get symptoms.

The NHS has produced some guidance to help parents understand when their child can and cannot attend school which you may find useful.

It is vital for children and young people’s learning and future opportunities that they are able to return to school and college. It is therefore vitally important that all we work together and do our bit to make this possible.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Viv Bennett CBE
Chief Nurse and Director Maternity and Early Years, Public Health England

Coronavirus concerns

Dear parent/carer,

You’re likely aware of the outbreak of novel coronavirus in China and the subsequent confirmed cases in the UK. At Mead, we take the health and safety of our pupils and staff very seriously, so we’re sharing guidance from Public Health England on steps you should be taking.
There’s currently no cause for concern at the school, but we’ll keep you informed about any developments and ensure we’re keeping the school clean to prevent the spread of any virus.

Prevent the spread of infection
Make sure you and your children follow these general principles to prevent spreading any respiratory virus:
*   Wash your hands often – with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or an alcohol-based sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available
*   Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
*   Avoid close contact with people who are sick
*   If you feel unwell, stay at home and don’t attend work or school
*   Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin
*   Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home
*   If you’re worried about your symptoms, please call NHS 111 – don’t go directly to your GP or other healthcare environment

If you or your children have returned from anywhere in Hubei province in past 14 days
If you or your children are currently well:
*   Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people as you would with flu viruses
*   Call NHS 111 to inform them of your recent travel to the area
*   Your other family members don’t need to take any precautions or make any changes to their own activities
If you become unwell:
*   Please call NHS 111 immediately in order for you to be assessed by an appropriate specialist in hospital, as quickly as possible

If you or your children have returned from a specified country in last 14 days
The specified countries are:
*   China (other than Hubei)
*   Hong Kong
*   Japan
*   Macau
*   Malaysia
*   Singapore
*   South Korea
*   Taiwan
*   Thailand
If you or your children are well:
*   You don’t need to avoid contact with other people
*   Your other family members don’t need to take any precautions or make any changes to their own activities
If you become unwell:
*   Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people as you would with other flu viruses
*   Call NHS 111 immediately in order for you to be assessed by an appropriate specialist in hospital, as quickly as possible

Symptoms to look out for
If you’ve returned from the specified countries or Hubei, look out for the following symptoms:
*   Cough
*   Difficulty in breathing
*   Fever (a temperature of 38 degrees C or higher)
If you have any of these symptoms:
*   If it’s an emergency, call 999 and tell them which country you have returned from in the past 14 days
*   If you’re unwell, but it’s not an emergency, call NHS 111 and tell them which country you have returned from in the past 14 days
While you wait for further advice:
*   Avoid contact with others
*   Stay at home – don’t go to work or school
*   Don’t travel while sick
*   Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing, throwing tissues in the bin
*   Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (or an alcohol-based sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available)

If you or your child have any further concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office on 01708343616
Yours sincerely

Newsletter- 6.09.19

Dear Parents,

It has been great to see all the children back from the summer break this week. They all look very smart and have returned with enthusiasm and are excited about the start of the new school year.
As we move into the new academic year, we would like to take this opportunity to say that our commitment to our pupils and families is as strong as it has ever been. It is our priority to ensure that Mead pupils continue to receive an outstanding education. I can assure you that staff will know your child personally and will ensure that we meet their needs fully. We will work tirelessly so that all of our pupils can achieve in their academic, creative, personal, physical, moral and spiritual success and above all make sure that they are happy to attend school each and every day.

It is humbling to come to work everyday with an amazing team of staff who work their hardest to provide your children with magical experiences and your continuous support and commitment is as always very much appreciated.

It is really pleasing to come back to a much improved environment. The corridors and stairwells in KS2 have been freshly painted and new flooring laid and the upstairs classrooms redecorated. We have new windows in the classrooms downstairs in the KS2 building, in our KS2 hall and in the school kitchen. Work has started on the installation of a new play area for our year 1 pupils-We are really looking forward to it’s completion within the next 2 weeks as are our children who are desperate to get out there.

As you may/may not be aware we have some structural problems with the outside wall of the KS2 hall and are waiting to hear from the L.A, as they are planning to do some remedial work in the near future. It is likely this will mean we won’t be able to use the hall for up to 12 weeks which may impact on forthcoming events. I will ensure relevant information in this regard is shared in my weekly newsletters.

Pupil Jobs and Homework Expectations
For our established parents you already know that we accept only the best at Mead. We achieve this by working together with our families and emphasizing some key values. Pupils are expected to:

1. Turn up every day on time

2. Do their best in every lesson

3. Be kind and polite to everyone that they meet

Parents and carers are expected to:

1. Ensure that our children arrive on time for school and ready to learn:

  a. Will have provided our children with a healthy breakfast

  b. They will have warm clean clothing

  c. Will make sure they have the right equipment for school (book bag, reading record, PE kit)

2. Parents/Carers are expected to support their children’s learning at home through:

  a. Reading regularly

  b. Helping them to practise their spellings and mental maths

  c. Encouraging them in their interests

3. Will model politeness and kindness to every-one

We will ensure that our staff are professional, approachable and focused on making sure that every child in their care achieves their full potential. Working together we can continue to deliver outstanding results for our pupils so that they have every chance of going on to succeed at the next stage of their education.

All pupils are expected to continue their learning at home. Over years 1-6 there are three core elements for this:

Pupils must read every night 15 mins (this may involve an adult reading them a bedtime story)

Pupils must practise their spellings for 15 mins ready for the test on Friday

Pupils must practise their times tables for 15 mins a night

Unexplained Absences

Image result for school attendance cartoon

I am writing to make you aware of the procedure for children who have unexplained absences from school.

There have been public cases in the past which you may have heard of where schools have not chased up the reasons as to why children are off of school. It has then transpired that there have been tragic circumstances around these absences, e.g. illness of a parent and the child hasn’t been able to seek help.
We will do everything we can to prevent such situations occurring as I am sure you would agree that your child’s safety is paramount to us all.

Therefore, please call the office on 01708343616 or email the Attendance Officer jkinchella@mead.havering.sch.uk by 09:15 to report their absence.

If we have not heard from you by 09:15 then our Attendance Officer will start to call all the contact numbers that you have provided in order to gain an explanation for the absence. If we still have not been able to ascertain where your child is then we will carry out a home visit. However if still haven’t been able to get a response then we will report it to the police as your child will then be classed a ‘missing child’.

This procedure is to ensure that we know where your child is and that you are all safe. This can be avoided if you let us know in good time why your child is absent from school. If you would like to talk to me further about this then I am happy for you to make an appointment to see me.

Weekly Newsletter -8th March 2019

Dear Parents,

World Book Day
Well done to everyone for the fabulous costumes on display yesterday. A lot of time and effort went into producing the homemade costumes which showcased the exceptional artistic talent possessed by some of our parents/carers.

It is really important you advise us as early as possible if your child is not coming to school, as Mrs Kinchella is having to make numerous calls to ascertain reasons for absence. It is a safeguarding concern if we are unaware of the reason for their absence, especially as a number of our children walk to school on their own.

Due to ongoing building work we are going to have slight disruption to classes in KS1/EYFS over the next few weeks. We will endeavour to keep this to a minimum but, for health and safety reasons, some classes will have to be relocated for a short period while improvements are made to classrooms. Consequently I need to advise you that next week Australia class will be working in the KS1 hall.

Please can I remind you that if pupils are wearing earrings to school they should be small studs and definitely not hoops or dangling earrings, as they can easily get caught whilst children are playing or during PE lessons. Also please be aware that staff are not permitted to remove earrings and that if the children remove them we can not be responsible for looking after them.

Diary Dates
Monday 11th March -Year 6 pupils are at the Globe Theatre and we are expecting delivery of the Living Eggs experience-I anticipate we’ll have some very excited KS1 children over the next few weeks, as they wait for the eggs to hatch.

Tuesday 12th March -Some of our year 5 pupils will be attending a Music Junction workshop at Draper’s Academy after school.

Wednesday 13th March- School nurse drop-in session between 8:30 and 9:00a.m. Parents/ carers are invited into school between 9:00 and 10:00 for a Reception workshop session. During the afternoon some of our year 3 pupils will be attending a Forest School session.

Thursday 14th March- Mexico class will be visiting The British Museum.

Friday 15th March- Biker’s breakfast for pupils who regularly cycle to school. We will be holding Science week assemblies so the children have the opportunity to share some of the exciting work they have done this week.

IMPORTANT DATES THIS TERM

Monday 8th April and Tuesday 9th April -15:30-18:00 -Parents Evenings

Friday 12th April -last day of Spring Term

Monday 15th April- Friday 26th April -Easter Holidays

Monday 29th April-Inset Day-School closed

Tuesday 30th April- Pupils come back to school

Havering Catering Services

N.Ireland had the highest attendance in LKS2 and at 96.7% and a massive well done to New Zealand who had the highest attendance in KS1 and overall at 99.1%. Well done to them!. Year 3 and 4 Road Safety

On Tuesday the 13th of November, the year 3 and 4 classes were lucky enough to attend a road safety workshop in the afternoon. This was a fast paced, informative and entertaining show that included singing, dancing and funny acting. This show highlighted the importance of road safety to the students, including topics such as:

  • Wearing a helmet when riding a bike or scooter.
  • Stopping and ensuring that you check both directions of traffic before crossing
  • Always cross the road with care.
  • Being safe on and around roads.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the show and took away a lot of information.

Road Safety Councillor Visit

We were delighted to welcome Jan Sargent from Gooshays Ward and Martin Goode and Brian Eagling from Harold Wood Ward. The councillors had come to listen to the presentation our JTAs had made about suggested alterations to road safety in the local area.

We know that as Mead has got bigger there are lots more children coming to school. We want them to be safe.
Amie

When we were outside doing our survey we saw lots of near misses. These were due to bad parking, speeding cars and children taking too long to cross. If we made some changes it would be a lot safer.
Pawel

The councillors were very impressed at the range of options that the children had worked on with the council safer travel team.

  • possible one way roads to ease congestion
  • narrowing of the roadway to one vehicle
  • enhanced crossing pints
  • 20mph speed limits
  • humped crossings
The children have been really engaged with this project. It is clearly something that matters to them!
Miss Doherty.

When the councillors left they said that they supported the proposals and would be looking forward to discussing them with their residents.

Hot weather arrangements

The hot weather is forecast to continue this week so please send your children in to school with sun hats and bottles of water (which we are happy to refill as necessary). Also it would be helpful if you could apply sun screen at home - if you consider further applications are necessary please send sun cream into school and we will provide time for the children to apply it prior to going outside

Weekly Newsletter- 25th May 2018

Dear Parents,

Where did that half term go? I can’t believe we are already half way through the summer term with only 7 school weeks before the summer holidays.

A lot has been accomplished this half term: Our year 6 and year 2 children have completed their SATs tests, we were the first school in the country to host the Indonesian Music School and our curriculum has been enhanced by some very interesting visitors to school and experiences off site.

SQuid
Unfortunately some parents/carers have run up considerable debts on their SQuid accounts. This is unacceptable as, ultimately the school has to bear the cost for unpaid dinners. We are now imposing a £10 limit per child-this means when the amount owed exceeds £10 parents/carers will be expected to send their child/children into school with a packed lunch until the debt is cleared (the child will NOT be offered a school dinner).

Summer Sun
It is wonderful that we are experiencing this lovely weather, let’s hope that it continues during and after the half term break. I would like to ask all parents to ensure that children have sun protection applied before they arrive at school. . It is also recommended that children wear caps/hats into school to wear during outdoor times. We will ensure that pupils have access to plenty of water throughout the day to keep them fully hydrated.

Don’t Forget About Veggie Run ...
What is the aim?

The app aims to create healthy competition amongst primary and Junior school children, where they learn to dodge unhealthy foods and get rewarded by collecting fruit and vegetables.
Why get the App?
The main advantage for pupils downloading and playing this app, is that pupils can win your school sports prizes!! These prizes are worth up to £200! Each school will receive a unique reference code that they share with pupils, who use this when they login to the game.

Where do I get the App?
Download and share the link here -https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/veggierun/id1339059186?mt=8

Mead school code - 7709

Why do we need to promote Healthy Lunches?
Recent evidence suggests that only 1% of packed lunches are healthy!
We hope from children playing the game they are able to identify the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods.

Hot weather advice

At last the sun has come out-Unfortunately too late for the children to enjoy during the Easter break!

Not quite sure how long the warmer weather is going to last but please remember to send your children into school with water and sun hats when/if it gets really warm.

Police Safety Talk 'Safety & Citizenship' - Year 6

Two Community Officers visited Mead Primary just before the Easter holiday as part of the 'Safety and Citizenship' promotion that provides a free-of-charge transport education service to schools within London.

The aim is to promote safe, responsible and respectful behaviour on and around London's transport system.

The session was delivered by an experienced School Liaison Officer, and a member of the local Metropolitan Police Service Safer Transport Teams.

The presentation supported our wider PSHCE curriculum.

I'll be using buses to get to my secondary school, so it gave me some great tips for how to use the buses safely.
Jack - Year 6

Now I know what to do if I feel unsafe or in danger when I am using public transport - it makes me feel much more confident.

Bike Safe Competition Winners

Reuban from Madagascar class is the KS1 winner and Ricardas from Brazil class is the KS2 winner of our Bike Safe Competition. They made a fantastic effort to come to school safely by wearing their helmets and have both won new scooters. Ricardas was so dedicated to being safe that he even took his helmet all the way to London on a recent Yr 6 trip.

Our JTAs also made a visit to classes to go over some top tips with pupils:

How to teach road safety to your children
Follow these basics to help you and your child stay safe when cycling:
  • make sure your child's bike fits and that all your bikes are roadworthy;
  • if you're on the road with children, take up a position behind them. If there are two adults in your group, it's a good idea to have one at the back and one in front of the children;
  • helmets are particularly recommended for young children. Ultimately, wearing a helmet is a question of individual choice and parents need to make that choice for their children;
  • set a good example, follow the Highway Code and teach children road safety and awareness.
Road safety rules for kids
  • don't jump red lights or cycle on the pavement unless it's a designated cycle path;
  • signal clearly at all times;
  • ride in a position where you can see and be seen;
  • make eye contact with other road users, especially at junctions, then you know they've seen you;
  • when riding at night always use a working white front light and red back light, plus a red rear reflector - it's the law!

The runners up of the competition each won a goody bag with exciting biking accessories. They were Jay Jay (Madagascar), Ivan (Kenya). Amy-Leigh (Italy), Samuel (Northern Ireland), David (U.S.A) Joseph (Canada) and Mrs Medhurst.

Collecting pupils

I am aware from time to time you need to make arrangements for someone else to collect your children from school. For security reasons it is imperative you let us know. In these circumstances please telephone the office with the name of the person collecting your child-this information can then be recorded and passed on to your child’s class teacher.
