Art - used wrapping paper needed

Dear Parents,

It's that time of year when gifts are given and received and in year 3 art next term we will be model making so please could you save some used wrapping paper for us to make the basic form to be covered. A carrier bag should be enough.

Tyger Tyger, burning bright, in the forests of the night

Year 3 have worked so very hard in art on their moving tiger projects over the past weeks.

After drawing tigers in detail, they investigated the texture and look of fur. They explored creating tiger fur in their sketchbooks.

After that, each group decided who was going to create the separate body parts of their tiger. Then they drew and coloured in detail. They even cut out separate claws, teeth and whiskers and added fabric and different papers for texture!

The final job was to connect the different parts using split pins so that the tigers can move.

Aren't they amazing - such detail!

On the class windows, they move in the breeze and create tiger shaped shadows across the classroom floor.

Tigers, tigers everywhere!

In year 3 art, we have been responding to the painting Surprised! By Henri Rousseau as part of the National Gallery's Take One Picture project. We discussed the painting in detail thinking about what we could see, hear, feel and smell.

The children were particularly interested in two aspects of the painting: how the weather is shown and the movement of the tiger.

We decided to draw tigers - it is incredibly difficult and the children shown great determination and resilience!

Surprised! Henri Rousseau

Cloth, thread, paint, pastel: Landscapes

In year 3 art, we have been learning how artists combine art and crafts using painting and sewing together to make art. We also thought about how to add further detail using oil pastel. We learned that when we use the different media we can use their unique qualities in different ways to build an image.

We explored different aerial footage of natural landscapes and used them as inspiration for our own landscape art.

We painted cotton fabric, sewed stitches as marks, added detail in oil pastel and finally make a frame to display the finished pieces.

The finished artwork is amazing and shows what talented artists there are in year 3.

Paper Sculptures

In year 3 art, for our final 3D piece, we learned how to twist, curl and fold paper in different ways to produce a sculpture.

We even learned how to make some quilling shapes. They were very fiddly to make but we persevered.

The final pieces were so very colourful, unique and amazing!

Bowls for an artist!

In year 3 art, the children have spent the past three weeks making a bowl using a mould and gummed paper.

In the first lesson, they covered a cone (the mould) with tissue paper and attached it using masking tape. Then they covered the tissue paper with brown gummed tape. They had to wet the adhesive side and carefully apply two or three layers of gummed paper to take the shape of the cone.

The following lesson, when the gummed paper had dried, they pulled off the masking tape and wriggled the cone out of the tissue paper. It was now firm and had taken the shape of the cone. We trimmed the edge of the bowl neatly, and painted the whole outside white as a primer.

Lastly, they collected visual notes using artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Howard Hodgkin as inspiration for the design of their bowl then transferred designs onto their 3D bowl using brightly coloured paint.

Cut out collages inspired by Matisse

In year 3 art, we have learned about collage.
We looked at some of the Cut Outs by the artist Henri Matisse.

Using his work as a starting point, and the idea of positive and negative spaces in the cut outs, we used animal stencils and coloured paper combinations to create some very bright, eye catching collages!

Bayeux Tapestry collages with a modern twist- weeks 2,3 & 4

In art, Year 3 have been very busy making their modern versions of the Bayeux Tapestry in the form of collage.

First, they created their own coloured papers by mixing primary coloured paints.

The following week, they began to make their collages by cutting and layering the coloured papers to create their version of the Bayeux Tapestry.

In week 4, they continued adding detail to their collages. Look at the cutting and sticking skills they have to create horses, buildings, ships, and all those different effects!

Bayeux Tapestry- Week 1

In year 3 art, we have begun a project responding to an artwork from another era. In the first week after half term, we drew in detail sections from the Bayeux Tapestry. 

The Bayeux Tapestry tells the epic story, in wool thread embroidered on linen cloth, of William, Duke of Normandy who became King of England in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings.

Atmospheric charcoal & chalk scenes

In year 3 art, the children have been learning how to draw atmospheric pictures and then created atmospheric scenes in a box. We turned off the lights, pulled down the blinds and used torches to create long shadows and a sharp contrast between light and dark. Spooky!

Year 3 Art: Drawing using Charcoal

In year 3, we have been focusing on gestural drawing using charcoal. We explored a variety of techniques for different effects. 

Then we drew a selection of very small objects enlarging them to A3 size. We had just a few minutes to draw each object!
