Weekly Newsletter - 22/07/2021 - Important Information

Dear Parents and Carers,

Summer School Holiday Meal Scheme

The government has extended the COVID Local Support Grant. The School Holiday Meal Scheme will provide £90

(£15 per week) per child to cover the 6 week summer break to families who are eligible and apply. If you wish to check your eligibility, use the School Holiday Meal link. The applications close at 5:00 tomorrow.

Pupil Premium Funding

Pupil Premium is a government scheme designed to support children from lower income families in order to provide them with the best possible start to their education.

Children who are eligible can have free school lunches (worth over £400 per year) and may receive financial assistance from the school for uniform, trips, breakfast club and other school clubs which require a payment to join.

This is possible because the school receives additional funding for every eligible child whose parents successfully register. All information concerning Pupil Premium children is treated completely confidentially and does not affect any other benefits currently being claimed. To check your eligibility or to apply, please use the Pupil Premium link.

Y3 parents in September

Please remember, school lunches must be paid for via Squid. The government funding of free school lunches finishes when children leave Y2. However, Pupil Premium children will continue to receive free meals.

Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 at Mead Primary School - Yr5

Dear Parents and Carers in Year 5,

This morning, I was notified that more than one pupil in Year 5 has tested positive for COVID-19. This

letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child.

Year 5 children must self-isolate with immediate effect up to and including Saturday 31st July.

Allcontacts are strongly advised to get a PCR test as soon as possible.

If your child has a cough, runny nose or any other symptoms, you are strongly advised to get them tested.

Please inform the school immediately if your child tests positive.

What to do if your child develops symptoms of COVID 19

● If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, they should remain at home for at least 10 days

from the date when their symptoms appear.

● All other household members who remain well must stay at home and not leave the house for 10

days.

● The 10-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.

● Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken

within the home.

● Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of

infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

● If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying

health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home

isolation period.

● Contact the school immediately if your child develops symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of:

● new continuous cough and/or

● high temperature

● a loss of, or change in, normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)

For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness. If your child or anyone in the household

does develop symptoms, you can seek advice online at Symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) or by

phoning NHS 111.

How to stop COVID-19 spreading

There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with

COVID-19:

● wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds

● use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

● wash your hands as soon as you get home

● cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or

sneeze

● put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

Testing centres in Havering

I am so sorry that we have needed to close the Year 5 bubble for their last day of the school year. I know

the children will be really disappointed that they were not able to spend their last day with their friends

and staff. As a staff, we are also very sad and in particular Miss Doherty and Miss Reid who are leaving our

school this year. I can only hope that when we return in September, the children are able to enjoy an

uninterrupted Year 6.

As ever, thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely,

Year 3 - Forest School - Week 10

Year 3 got to have their final forest school session today. The shade of the trees was most welcome. It was time for the favourites from our time together so we played zombies, used the hammock and had lots of imaginative play. The fire was lit, marshmallows were toasted, s’mores made and hot chocolate and squash enjoyed. We headed back inside just as the rain started to fall.

Enjoy your summer break Year 3!

Music Exam Stars

A huge congratulation to children who took the ABRSM piano exams in June 2021. They worked tirelessly in the last few months to catah up on their skills and we are not surprised that they all passed with good results. We are very proud of your achievement and wish you a wonderful Summer.

Germany's Cultural Week

After looking at Kings and Queens, Germany had a German feast day! We tried lots of different meats and cheeses, as well as apple juice and chocolate milk (very popular with German children). We also decorated our pretzels with some delicious desserts!

'My favourite was the pretzels,' said Remi. Lexi also liked the different foods, because it was fun to taste something different.

After our feast, we made some traditional Lanterns (lanterne) used in Martinstag (St Martin's Day). St Martin became a saint after he tore his cloak in half to help a man who was freezing to death. He is celebrated for his kindness, and on St Martin's day, one man will pretend to be the Saint on a grand horse, with lots of children following him with lanterns! The children sing many traditional songs (some about hoping the flame doesn't burn their paper lantern!).

Firstly, we made the lanterns, and Germany proved how kind they are, as others buzzed around the classroom helping each other make their tricky lanterns. After these lanterns, we took a fake candle, and learned one of the traditional songs in German! No burning lanterns here!

'I think it was fun to experience German food,' said Evie. Jasmine also loved tasting all the different food and drinks.
'I liked making the lanterns, because it was fun to make something all together.' Daisy said.

We had a lot of fun learning a new culture this week!

Meet the Teacher

Monday 19th July 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

This afternoon, the children were introduced to their new teacher and support staff in their new classroom for next

year. Year 5 did not spend time in their new classroom as the new Year 6 block is not quite ready. However, I did give them a tour of the new build which they were very excited to see. Their new classrooms will look fantastic once finished!

We will arrange for children in Egypt to meet Miss Morgaine and for the children in New Zealand to meet Miss Gibson tomorrow afternoon when they all return back to school following the bubble closure. In addition, we will make plans for the children in Jamaica to meet Miss Miklaucich once she returns to school (she was unwell today).

As you will see, there are a number of staff changes in September. At the end of this term, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Shah, Mrs Wagner, Miss Bloom, Miss Reid, Miss Doherty, Miss Bush and Mrs Rand. We wish them every success in their new roles and would like to thank them for everything they have done for our school, especially over the last 18 months which has been a particularly challenging time.

In September, we are pleased to welcome Miss Adams, Miss Johnson, Miss Holmes, Mrs Gladman, Miss Ward and

Miss Marris to our teaching team. They met with their new class this afternoon and are very much looking forward to working with your children next year.

Miss Murray will be on maternity leave in September and we wish her well with her exciting family news.

Yours sincerely,

Mr D Denchfield

Executive Headteacher, The Learning Federation

On your marks, get set ....... GO

The sun came out for year one's sports day this week.  The children from Palau, Australia and New Zealand had a wonderful time competing against each other in lots of fun activities, such as the egg and spoon race, beanbag throwing competition, dressing the teacher race, the sack race and the relay running race.  As you can see from the pictures below a brilliant time was had by all.  And the winning class was..............Australia.  Well done to them!
