Year 2 Newspaper Sculpture

Who would have thought that a material like newspaper could construct a strong structure like a castle.

Yesterday, to the children's amazement Darcy a visiting artist helped year 2 do this. The children worked together demonstrating reciprocity, resilience and great problem solving skills as they rolled and compressed newspaper in special machines that Darcy had invented. Then the strong sticks they made fixed together to create a sculpture of a castle. We have been learning about castles and William the conqueror in our history lessons. We don't think William the Conqueror would have wanted a paper castle but it was great fun creating one for us that even has the battlements at the top. This castle will be used in the outside learning environment so the children can enjoy their efforts.

Year 3 painting!

Year 3 have been working hard in their painting unit this half term! They have practised mixing primary and secondary colours, using different brush strokes and looking at the work of famous artists! Children have enjoyed looking at abstract paintings, creating paintings of the sky, as well as naming their own colours.

This week, pupils learned about two techniques Sgraffito and Tonking. Children experimented with newspaper and etching to create their own fantastic art words - pictures included!

YEAR ONE DAZZLE FOR DIWALI

The children in year one have had an exciting week learning about the festival of Diwali.  They have made rangoli rice patterns, sparkly diya lamps and even enjoyed a Diwali dance workshop, delivered by the fantastic West End in Schools Theatre Company.  As well as being great fun these activities have inspired the children's Big Write this week.

"I'm really excited because today we are putting out diya lamps in my house!" exclaimed Visha.

In the Negative: Dark Tonal Portraits Year 5

In year five we have been looking at portraits by the artist Auerbach. He works in the negative, producing dark tones in his work. Here are some examples of his portraits:

Drawing in Year Five

 This half term, year 5 have been developing their drawing skills using a variety of media. 

They explored the artwork of Hunterwasser. Here are some examples of his work: 

The pupils used a viewfinder to select parts one painting and copy it. They then enlarged one and added their own imaginative detail. Here are some examples of the pupils' work.

The following lesson, the pupils did observational drawings of thistles and once again, added their own imaginative detail. They then learnt about tone and explored using a variety of media including: charcoal, chalk, graphite sticks, pencils, and erasers.  Here are a few examples of their work:

Year 3 - Observational Drawing

This half term, Year 3 have been working on their observational drawing techniques. Children have enjoyed many lessons. Here are some examples of their work.

Scotland Class

Children took a line for a walk then within the spaces created they explored shading using lines and mark making and various patterns such as hatching and parallel lines.

Northern Ireland Class

Children listened to the poem ‘The Hippocrump’. Children were then asked to imagine them self face to face with the Hippocrump and draw what they imagined from the descriptive language used in the poem. They then used oil pastels for the colour.

Children used a viewfinder on their drawing of a Rangoli pattern (from a previous R.E lesson). They were asked to select an interesting part to develop further. The children then enlarged their drawings and select the correct colours to finish their image.

Who would have thought that a material like newspaper could construct a strong structure like a ship. To the children's amazement Darcy a visiting artist helped year 2 do this.

The children worked together demonstrating reciprocity, independence and great problem solving skills as they rolled and compressed newspapers in special machines invented by Darcy.

Then the sticks they made were fixed together using cable ties to create a sculpture of one of Christopher Columbus's ships. 

The ship will spend its life in our outside environment where the children can enjoy it.

Half Term Arts and Crafts

Mental Health Awareness Week in Germany

This week in Germany, we used the week's theme of 'finding your brave' to learn how to work through our worries and anxiety. 

Firstly, we read Wilma Jean the Worry Machine together with our cuddly reading buddies, and the children were asked whether they felt like they had anything in common with Wilma! We discovered we had lots of 'What If...' questions and worries buzzing around heads!

 After the story, we learned about Guatemalan worry dolls, and the legend of the princess that was gifted the power to solve any human worry. We made worry boxes, and wrote down five worries that were bothering us. The worries can stay in the box until you are ready to deal with them, or to ask an adult's help!

'My box has heart eye emojis so that when I look at it, it will make me feel happy.' said Felicity. 

'I like the worry boxes because I have lots of worries. I can put them in here and take them out when I am ready to deal with them,' said Georgia. 

 Austeja said, 'I like them, because sometimes I am really worried but can't get the worries out.'

Germany Students a Work of Art!

On Monday, Germany class took the long journey to Tate Britain to see the result of the art project in which they participated in year 3.

The children were thrilled to see their image on the wall of a prestigious art gallery, among many children like them. Tate Britain kindly showed our class's photos on a projector, and allowed us to explore the gallery and the many interesting (and sometimes puzzling!) works of art.

'I can't believe I'm in a gallery!' said Millie. 'They're strange, but I really like the works of art.'

The project is one of the most ambitious portrait projects ever undertaken, and was created by Turner-Prize winning artist and Oscar winning filmmaker Steve McQueen.
