Little spiders in Year 1

Last month, the minds of Year 1 embarked on a rhythmic adventure that intertwined movement, percussion, and the timeless beauty of classical music. Using the innovative Bati Strauss method, the children were introduced to the intricate structures of music composition through a form of 'active listening'.

The Bati Strauss method is a gateway that allows young learners to explore classical masterpieces in a way that is both engaging and educational. It invites the children to express what they hear through expressive gestures and the playful rhythm of percussion instruments. This multisensory approach not only deepens their understanding of music but also enhances their motor skills and coordination.

The classroom was alive with excitement as the children experienced ‘La Basque’, a piece that emanates the grandeur and elegance of the Baroque period. The music, characterised by its harmonic richness and emotional depth, served as the backdrop for a delightful story about little spiders spinning their webs. Each note of ‘La Basque’ seemed to mirror the spiders’ intricate movements, inspiring the young listeners to sway and move in harmony with the music.

Through the form of storytelling, the music was transformed into a vivid narrative that captured the children's imagination. They were no longer just listeners but active participants in the creation of a musical story.

New Zealand Forest School

This week New Zealand has their second forest school session. We had lots of fun digging, climbing and balancing. We played a game of hide and seek. We also made our own jingle bells using twigs, pipe cleaners and bells.

Year 1 trip to the Church

What a wonderful trip Year 1 had to St. Paul's Church today.  We found out all about the Christmas story through drawing and songs.  It was the first time many of Year 1 had been to a church.  In RE we have been learning about birth ceremonies and we were lucky to see the font and where the holy water would be.  We had a lovely time.

Palau Class Forest School

Palau class had a lovely (but cold) time at forest school this week. We discussed the recent storms and noticed any changes that had happened as a result. We played in the mud kitchen and dug some holes. While we were digging we found some friendly worms who we measured to find out their lengths. Some worms measured 3cms! We swung each other in the hammock and practiced our balance on the logs and tension rope.

Finally we constructed Santa's Sleigh out of logs and sang Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer to make the sleigh magical.
