Reception Forest School

So far this half term all 3 reception classes have enjoyed their visits to the forest again.

With some warmer weather arriving it has been a welcome afternoon of shade under the tree canopies.

They enjoyed hearing about the bee houses that year 2 had been making at forest school and it was the perfect introduction to our 'Mini Mead Meadow' project.

All children were invited to make a seed bomb, by counting out and mixing ingredients to make their own mud balls that they then rolled through the wildflower seeds.

We hope to watch these flourish and provide plenty of opportunities for the bees to visit lots of different flower varieties.

Many children enjoyed learning how to use the hammock and gently swaying their friends and we had some great teamwork moving logs around the forest to build our own teepees.

A little shell

This week the children in reception learnt a lovely poem called "A Little Shell".

Reception experience day

On Friday 24th May the children in reception are invitited to come to school dressed as what they want to be when they are older. We thought this would be a nice learning experience as our "Growing and changing" topic comes to an end in providing the children with an opportunity to think about and share a job they might like to do when they are grown-ups. The children may have already began discussing this, as one of our homework bingo activities was to draw a picture and write a sentence about what they want to be and now they will be able to bring this to life. We look forward to seeing the many job roles they may choose to do!

Barbados class visited the book fair

The book fair came to Mead and Barbados class got to go and visit it. There was lots of eager children ready to explore the books on the shelves. There was a range of books on offer which appealed to all the children, many of whom found one they wanted to take home! Maaz said "I really loved the book fair". We got to spend some time looking at the different titles and sharing what the books might be about before heading back to class. It was lovely to see the children embracing in a love of reading and literature.

Musicians in the making

This week in reception we introduced our new outside music wall. It has been lovely to see the children expressing themselves through musical creativity and exploring the different sounds which can be made. It has sparked curiosity and wonder as the children are finding a range of materials to help them create different sounds on the various pots and pans. Here are some of our musicians in action....

Maths in reception

Across reception we have been busy using and applying the skills we have been learning in our maths sessions within our child initiated learning. We use the manipulatives available to create and solve our own number problems. The past two weeks we have been learning all about doubling and have used cubes, shapes, dominoes and natural resources to help us identify and solve a doubling problem. Here is some of our amazing work in action!

The awe of drawing club across Reception

Drawing club has continued to be a HUGE success across reception this half term, with many children diving into their imaginations to create some wonderful drawings inspired by our book or animation focus. The children have been enjoying our 'get up, stand up' vocabulary inputs and have been independently using these new found words during everyday conversations. As part of our drawing club sessions we focus on the 3M's - mark making, maths and making conversations. They are providing the children with an opportunity to share and discuss their drawings as well expressing their ideas which has been providing many awe and wonder moments. Take a look at some of the amazing work the children have been producing and how they have been applying their phonic knowledge to help them decode and spell unfamiliar words.

A tiny little seed
