Pearson Teaching Award

We were delighted to receive our Certificate of Excellence from Pearson this week. It recognises the hard work that has gone in from parents, pupils Governor and staff to create a fantastic learning environment at Mead.

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach.

Michael Morpurgo, celebrated author and former Children’s laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: “The best we can do is to pass on to children all that we know and love and mean every word. I think above all else, a teacher should be a friend, and that’s not an easy thing to do when there are 35 children out there. With these awards we are shining a light on these inspirational individuals whose efforts and commitment so often go uncelebrated.”

Our pupils were delighted to be announced as runners-up of an engineering competition with Ford.

A team of ourYear 5 pupils worked through the Primary Engineering programme, a national scheme that works with schools across the country to inspire children to pursue careers in science and engineering.

They worked with Mr Gowers at school to build their own car, using real tools and equipment.

They considered structures, steering, propulsion and had to get their car to climb up a slope.

At the competition held at Ford Dunton, our pupils presented their work to the judges and were presented with second place trophy.

Teacher Mr Gowers said: “It was also wonderful to receive the feedback from judges that our children had achieved the key design goals set, were able to articulate the engineering techniques they had applied and had clearly enhanced their love for STEM as a consequence.”

Chris Rochester, 42, regional director of the company, said: “It was superb and incredible. We had amazing event with champion children who showed off their work after engaging and working with ford engineers."

We’re In The Paper: TES Awards

We are extremely proud to see Mead Primary featured in the Romford Recorder this week. Our school and Federation are delighted to be shortlisted as the Employer of the Year by the Times Educational Supplement (TES). 

This year saw a record number of entries, so to see our school sitting with the very best in th country is a real accolade. 

None of the progress would have been possible without the fantastic support from parents and the hard work of our amazing pupils! 

Now we just have to go and win the trophy!

It was great to see our Reception pupils in the paper this week! No doubt it will feel just like five minutes have passed and they will be having their Year 6 Leavers photo!

We're In The Paper: Picnic In The Park

This week the Romford Recorder have featured the Picnic In The Park story. Music and performance are a real strength at Mead and we were delighted to have the chance to share it with so many parents friends and families.

We're In The Paper: Pirate Day Y1

To celebrate the end of their topic Year 1 pupils at Mead Primary had a Pirate Day. Hordes of young pirates swarmed across the playground in the morning, ready for a day of treasure hunting, parrot training and general skullduggery. First the trainee pirates had a performance from the Hobgoblin Theatre Company who retold them the story of Treasure Island. Inspired by that tale of gold and fortune the Pirates were released from the hall to start their very own treasure hunt.

Sprinkled through the gold coins led the Year 1 pupils to the desert island where the chest had been buried. Using their maps the children then had to work out the best place to dig. Inside the buried caskets were instructions and materials to make their very own pirate ships. Anyone who didn't follow the instructions risked being asked to walk the plank!

The immersive nature of the day, and the great theatre production from the Hobgoblin Company meant that the children produced some fantastic work. By making their learning come to life in this way we are able to get far more from their writing and conversation... it was really successful!

We're In The Paper: Year 6 Leavers

We were delighted to our Year 6 pupils featured in the Romford Recorder Y6 Leavers Booklet. The results that they have achieved this year are significantly above the national average and show that Mead is back on top once again!

Poetry Day: Jacob Sam La Rose

Our Learning Federation pupils had a fantastic day of poetry with Jacob Sam La Rose. The London poet spent the day composing and performing poems based on the children's own experiences.

Hosted by Mead Primary, it was a great opportunity for our two sets of pupils to work together and produce some wonderful collaborative efforts.

School Council Guide Dog Trail

Pupils from the Mead Primary School Council organised a 1p coin event to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Pupils were asked to reach down the back of their sofa, empty out their savings jars, check under the seats of the car and look beneath their beds for all the 1p coins they could find.

When they arrived in school, the Council representatives helped to lay them in the Penny Trail on the playground. The finished area measured approximately 8m long. Once the trail had been laid, the school council started the time consuming job of counting up and bagging the coins.

“It was fun to collect all of the pennies, everyone was amazed at how many coins are hidden in your house. To have raised so much without having to really touch your wallet is amazing!”

Next week the pupils will be having a visit from a real Guide Dog, to show them how their money will be used to benefit the charity.

​"This idea for fundraising was special as it came completely from the children. They discussed it in their classes and at the Council meeting. Once they had decided the children organised all the details and ensured a very successful fundraising event... well done!"

In total over £100 was raised for the charity - all through collecting coins from jars and the sofa!

We're In The Paper: Santa Experience

A huge thank you to our parent benefactor who donated a £1,000 to bring this experience to life. The generous donation all us to create a special Santa event for our pupils.

During the night Santa's sleigh crashed to the ground stranding some of his reindeer and putting the whole operation for Christmas into jeopardy.

Brave pupils from Mead had to battle through the woods and the snow to find the reindeer and follow the clues to reunite them with Santa.

At such a busy time they still found time to think of their Broadford friends and invited them down to come and share in the festive mystery. This was certainly one Christmas that the children won't forget in a hurry!

After an exciting day trying to find Santa’s sleigh and reindeer the children of Mead school have made it into the local paper. The event turned the rear of the school into an amazing winter wonderland and the children had fun trying to find Santa’s lost items.

Chile trip - Sky Academy Trip

On Wednesday the pupils from Chile class had the privilege of becoming journalists, news broadcasters, editors and graphic designers when they visited the Sky Studios. They attended a workshop when they had the opportunity to write and produce their own news reports, which they then presented to the camera suitably suited and booted. They also met a few stars who inspired them!

Tyler was in the zone and claimed ‘It was the best trip ever’.

What is the Sky Academy?

Sky Academy Skills Studios is a half-day interactive learning experience giving eight to 18-year-olds the chance to use the latest broadcast technology to make a TV report on subjects they’re studying at school. 

What do they do while they are there?

The team at Sky have combined a behind-the-scenes tour with hands-on experience of the purpose-built studios. Here, the students write, produce and direct their own short news bulletin.

The young people are supported by a specialist team and staff volunteers who help them use their creativity, communication, planning and teamwork skills as they explore topics linked to the curriculum, such as cyber-bullying and natural disasters.

Where is the Sky Academy?

We currently have two Skills Studios, one in West London and one in Livingston in Central Scotland. Each has the capacity to host 12,000 young people a year.

We're In The Paper: TfL STARS Gold Award

Congratulations to our pupils from both Broadford and Mead Primary School who have received gold sustainable travel active responsible safe (STAR) status for having completed 40 different travel activities over a three year period.

The pupils were also able to demonstrate a six per cent shift away from car use with at least 90pc of children travelling by non-car modes.

Year 6 teacher Amelia Chau said: “Our families are almost all within 800 metres of the school gates, so cutting congestion, pollution and inactivity is very achievable. This event has helped to inspire our pupils to think big for the year ahead so that they can have even greater impact.”

Pupils attended a seminar at Camden Town Hall on Thursday, October, 13 to receive their award.

Environmental activities included, walk to school days, walking and cycling competitions.

Year 5 star of the week.

This week Abbie, in year 5, was chosen as the star of the week in the Romford Recorder. She was delighted, even though  they did write that she attends Broadford Primary school!
