Weekly Newsletter-8th November 2019

Dear Parents,
IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY NOTICE THAT CHILDREN ARE STILL RIDING BIKES/SCOOTERS ON SITE DESPITE MY REMINDER AT THE GATE EVERY MORNING!

THIS CAUSES CONGESTION, ESPECIALLY ON THE PATHWAY TO THE KS1 BUILDING, AND A NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED- PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILDREN FOLLOW THE SCHOOL RULES AND REFRAIN FROM RIDING BIKES/SCOOTERS ON THE SCHOOL SITE.

This week is anti-bullying week and the theme is 'Change starts with us’
This year the goal is to inform schools and settings, children and young people, parents and carers to know that it takes a collective responsibility to stop bullying. Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well into adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Because together, we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with working together.

Pupils are invited to show solidarity with other schools across the country on 12th November by wearing odd socks to school and we will be planning activities across all year groups on this day.

We now know that there will be a General election on December 12th. I have been notified that the school will be used as a polling station and therefore, for safeguarding reasons we’ve decided to close. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause working parents but trust there is sufficient time for you to make child care arrangements. Please be aware that Christmas concerts scheduled for this day have now been moved to Monday December 16th.

Congratulations to Karen howell who has been elected as the new Parent Governor representing Mead on the Learning Federation Governing Board. Thank you to the other candidate Nina Beyers for putting her name forward and to all of you who took the time to cast your vote. The final result was very close.

TES Awards 2018

#TESAwards10

We are looking forward to the TES Awards on the 22nd June at the Grosvenor House Hotel. This year the TES hosted an event at the House of Commons, in partnership with Lucy Powell MP.

It was a chance for all of the finalist to meet prior to the main event. Having the chance to network with so many inspiring individuals and schools was a fantastic experience.

This year Mead Primary is shortlisted for Employer of the Year and Headteacher of the Year. Hopefully we can bring home some glassware for the trophy cabinet!

We’re In The Paper: TES Awards

We are extremely proud to see Mead Primary featured in the Romford Recorder this week. Our school and Federation are delighted to be shortlisted as the Employer of the Year by the Times Educational Supplement (TES).

This year saw a record number of entries, so to see our school sitting with the very best in th country is a real accolade.

None of the progress would have been possible without the fantastic support from parents and the hard work of our amazing pupils!

Now we just have to go and win the trophy!

Weekly Newsletter
7th July  2017
Dear Parents,

Thank you to all of the families who attended the LFPA summer fete on Saturday. There were lots of people enjoying the music, food and drink, entertainment and sunshine. All of the children had a fabulous time on the inflatables and I am sure were completely worn out by the end of it all.
The day would not have happened if it was not for all of the hard work of the LFPA executive committee and LFPA volunteers. On behalf of the whole federation community I would like to say thank you for all of your team work and efforts to ensure that fete was such a success. Once all of the pennies have been counted we will announce the grand total.

Governor & Parents Meeting Minutes

Dear Parents,

We were delighted with the number of families who were represented at the Parent & Governor Coffee morning. The turnout from both schools was heartening to see and certainly was great evidence of how the community will be at the forefront of our achievements as a Federation.

Understandably many parents were unable to make the meeting due to family or work commitments. Please find below the notes from the discussion to keep you informed about how we are progressing:

Welcome
Gill Gordon (Chris Kent was absent due to unforeseen circumstances) welcomed parents to the first joint meeting. Gill described how positive the feeling had been about the Federation during the recent Ofsted Inspection and how good it was to see so many parents in the hall for the meeting.

Meetings would continue to alternate between Mead & Broadford.

Purpose of the meetings was for Governors to talk to parents about plans, progress so far and to hear their thoughts on how the schools were doing.
Vision & Values update
Mr Drakes - Executive Headteacher - provided an update on the Values expected of Parents, Staff & Pupils. This had also been covered at the recent Parent Forum meetings at both schools. There were some key facts about the RM3 postcode and how the deprivation could be a limiting factor for pupils if the quality of education wasn’t world class
  • Pupils from a poor background and 4x more likely to be poor themselves when older
  • 9 in 10 people in a low paid job are still in that job after 8 years
  • Those who are unable to read by the age of 10 will earn 20% less than their peers
  • The life expectancy gap between RM3 & RM14 is 7 years
Clear imperative for Broadford & Mead staff to work hard to ensure all pupils get the very best possible education.

Key is being able to read well - so our vision specifically refers to the need for pupils to be able to read by the age of 6.

Feedback from Ofsted & LA about Federation
The Ofsted report referred to the strength of the relationship between the two schools and how it had been a powerful agent for change and improvement:
  • Staff morale is high. Teachers told inspectors that they were excited about the new federation. Senior leaders have set a clear vision and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the school’s strengths and weaknesses.
The local authority has supported the school well on its journey of improvement prior to the federation with Broadford Primary School. The school is an active member of a network of schools.
  • There is a strong collaborative approach to planning as teachers have the opportunity to share good practice with other teachers from Broadford Primary School
Over the next few months we expect to see a formal change of structure that will better reflect the shared leadership between the two schools and the collaborative teaching.

Update on buildings work @ Mead
Parents were shown images of the near completed EYFS learning area: tree houses, nature gardens, tunnels, water play and construction area. It is anticipated that the remaining equipment (music feature and sound systems) will be in place by the end of the term. Parents will then be invited to have a look at the new area and see the impact it is having on the children’s learning.

Broadford parents were reassured that there will be continued investment, but much of the focus was inside: new flooring, updated screens for teachers, new ICT network, new PCs. This was due to the lack of clarity about exactly would be included in the new build project.

Update on expansion @ Broadford
The plans were due to be completed soon. They will be available for parents to view at the next Parents Forum in the Spring Term. We expect construction to begin in Feb/Mar of 2017 with completion by Dec/Jan 2018

Launch of Teaching School
Mr Drakes informed parents that Broadford had now been accredited as a National Teaching School. This would mean that we would be able to have our own ITT programs to train teachers, provide CPD for our staff and work as an agent for the LA. It also drew in much needed funding to the schools so that we can support our extended leadership team and retain key staff.

Questions & Feedback
There weren’t any questions from parents
We look forward to seeing you next term, when the coffee morning will be held at Mead Primary.

Yours faithfully

Gill Gordon
Chris Kent
Co-chairs of Governor

Playground Safety Surface

Dear Parents

When we got feedback from the children about which areas of the school they wished to improve 85% of them highlighted the lack of equipment on the playground for them to use. Many of these pupils are very aware of the variety of opportunities available to Broadford pupils.

Play equipment is expensive. In order to pay for the £16,000 gym installation we secured a £10,000 grant from Awards for All. We wanted the area to be available in all weathers, so installing into grass wasn't an option - it would very quickly become slippery and too muddy to use. Consequently we had a gravel surface installed. This cost an additional £3,000.

The total area that we created is 180 sq m in size. We opted for this so that - when additional funds are available - we will be able to add extra equipment: clamber walls, extra gym equipment and trim trail elements.

Some parents have asked why a safety surface wasn't installed. The reasons for this are listed below:

  • The gravel/compacted Type 1 surface is safe: pupils are supervised at break and lunchtimes, running through/in between the equipment isn't permitted and pupils have been shown how to use the equipment safely in assemblies.
  • The cost of a safety surface for an area that size is prohibitively expensive: the costs we have been quoted are between £18-23,000.
  • We are yet to finish installing equipment in that area. Once funds are available then we will add new items into the empty areas and we wanted a surface that would allow us to do that easily.
  • No surface is perfectly safe. At both schools the worst accidents we have had on the playground have both occurred on areas where there is a wet pour surface - though we should mention these incidents are few and far between.
Some parents have also wanted to seek the opinion of health and safety experts. We take the safety of your children extremely seriously and already have support in place from the Borough, Sovereign Play (who inspect the play equipment), Ofsted and our own Governors.
  • Our Health & Safety representative recently completed a walk around the whole site to take in all of the new equipment. No recommendations were made regarding the recently installed gym equipment.
  • The third party play equipment inspector made no recommendations regarding the gravel play surface
  • The Health & Safety Executive have also spoken to the school and assured us - as recently as this week - that there is no need for any further work to be done to the surface.
  • Ofsted had only positive comments to make about the gym equipment - inspectors even tried it out during the recent inspection in October making some very specific comments about the way in which the site has been developed:

Governors know their school well, and are confident and skilled in asking challenging questions. Their expertise has been used very well to ensure that it benefits the school. For example, their knowledge of construction has enabled the school to improve buildings and outdoor play areas.

They are active in the playground, where they enjoy using a good range of equipment together. The newly bought outdoor gym equipment is very popular, with queues of patiently waiting pupils eager to take their turn. Pupils speak enthusiastically about its use and how it helps them physically.

As you can see we have listened carefully to those third parties who also take your children's welfare seriously. All are satisfied that the play equipment is safe.

We hope that this reassures you that we have taken your concerns seriously and that our actions are well thought through. We also would hope that - as many of you have - you recognise the huge level of investment that has taken place over the last six months to rapidly improve provision in all areas of the school. We have created a fantastic learning environment - but we are not done yet. Every penny we can get will be used to improve the facilities further and we look forward to more installations in the near future.

Thank you again for taking such an interest.

Governors' Coffee Morning - 1st November @ Broadford

This meeting is for parents/carers of both schools in the Federation!

We are delighted to be able to invite you to the next Governors’ Coffee Morning.

We believe these meetings are a vital way for Governors and Parents to communicate. We also believe it is an effective way for the Governors to communicate key aspects of the strategic vision that they have for the school and invite parents and carers to contribute to that.

Date: Tuesday 1st November 2016
Time: 9am-10.15am
Location: Broadford Primary School

Tea, Coffee, biscuits and cakes will be provided.

To help encourage maximum parental participation, we have introduced a competition.

Parents and carers who attend will be given a raffle ticket. The draw will be made at the end of the event, with the child who wins earning a luxury stationary hamper worth £200 for their class!

Mrs Nicholls & Mrs Smith will show children during an assembly, with the intention that they'll come home and encourage family members to attend.

The first coffee morning held last term was at Mead, hence we will be alternating across both school sites each term.

Nursery Windows

We were delighted to see the completion of the EYFS windows this week. Nursery now have brand new frames and doors around the whole of their building which will have a number of benefits:

  • the appearance of the building is now much more in keeping with what we want to portray - a world class environment for world class learning
  • the classrooms will be much warmer in the winter as the power coated aluminium frames and insulated glass will preserve the heat
  • In the Summer it will be cooler as all of the windows will open - before the old frames were often stuck.
However we aren't finished yet! Despite spending £40,000 of this project, Governors are keen to finish the area with a colour render, which will really modernise and freshen the front of the building. That is in addition to the extra play equipment and resources which are still to come over the next few weeks!

Vision & Values

Vision
Our vision is to ensure that we deliver nothing less than an outstanding school experience for your children, so that they have the very best start in life - they deserve nothing less. We believe that we can always find 1% gains to further improve what we do. It is very worrying that in 2016, where you are born in Havering still has such an impact on your life chances. There is a 7 year life expectancy gap between children born in Harold Hill and those born in Upminster. If we don’t provide a world class education and act responsibly as parents then we become part of the problem, rather than empowering our children to have a brighter future where they can choose their own place to live, work and raise a family.

Our united school community - which now numbers over 1,200 pupils and 120 staff - can be a powerful force for positive change and raising standards. By working together we will ensure that Mead & Broadford are the best schools on the Hill, and an education community that looks to put a dent in the universe much further afield too!

Values
To achieve these aspirational goals we will need to behave in a certain way everyday! These expectations are laid out below:
  • Turn up everyday… on time
  • Do your best in every lesson
  • Be kind and polite to everyone you meet
However we also need to have expectations of ourselves as adults: our behaviour, attitude and professionalism. We expect our staff to demonstrate these qualities every day:
  • Inspiration: aiding pupils to realise what they can achieve, having high expectations and setting a great role model
  • Innovation: looking for ways to reflect on what we can do, consistently making 1% gains and working with others
  • Integrity: being confidential with information, being trusted by all members of the school community and delivering on our promises
You too, as parents, are vitally important. The children will spend 87% of their year in your care, so your influence is vital. Having listened to feedback on what you think is important we believe that our parents and carers should:

1. Ensure that pupils arrive on time for school and ready to learn:
a. Parents will have provided their children with a healthy breakfast
b. Pupils will have warm clean clothing
c. Parents will make sure their children have the right equipment for school (book bag, reading record, PE kit)

2. Will support their children’s learning at home through:
a. Reading regularly
b. Helping them to practise their spellings and mental maths
c. Encouraging them in their interests

3. Will model politeness and kindness to everyone they meet

By ensuring we all do our job and show these behaviours consistently everyday we have a great chance of making a real difference to the life chances of our community! We will be discussing expectations for parents and the Vision & Values at our Parent Forums later this term.

Federation Parents' Meeting

We had a very positive Federation meeting for parents on July 4th. Parents from both schools meet at Mead to discuss how they are feeling about the recent changes, meet the new Governing Board, ask questions about the new arrangements and hear what changes are already planned for both schools.

What benefits will my children see?
Working as two schools means that we can offer much wider curriculum opportunities. Mead pupils have already benefitted from author days at Broadford and a writer's workshop. Broadford pupils have benefitted from the chance to attend a careers fair. Now that the Federation is confirmed, our teachers have already met to plan regular collaboration for next year and a whole range of joint activities.

Will Broadford pupils have to move to Mead if there isn't enough space?
Both schools remain separate entities and admissions are governed by Havering. Pupils do not need to be housed at different sites - both schools have ample space to look after their own pupils. If parents wanted to move between the two schools they would have to use the standard procedure with the Borough.

Who will be in charge at each school?
Each school will have its own Head of School, while there will be one Executive Headteacher in place over both schools. For an interim period these posts will be filled by:
Mr Drakes (Executive Head)
Mrs Smith (Mead Head of School)
Mrs Nicholls (Broadford Head of School)

What is different about the Governing Body?
There is now one Governing Board that has oversight across both schools. Previously here were two Governing bodies who acted independently

Why will a Federation improve our schools?
There will be a clear vision for the two schools focused on how we can use high quality education to ensure that pupils' backgrounds don't impact on future achievement. Teachers will benefit from collaborative working and sharing best practice. Pupils will have a wider community in which to work and play. Financially the two schools will be able to get much better pricing and deals on purchases.

Will the new Federation raise standards?
It is our intention to ensure that both schools have outstanding results. This year both schools have exceeded national achievements by over 25%!
