Walk to School Week 2020
Are you up for the challenge?
On Monday the 5th of October we will be taking part in the walk to school five-day challenge. We challenge you to walk, cycle, scoot or park and stride to school every day for one week.
This year Living Streets are asking us to join them this coming week in celebrating the incredible physical and mental health benefits walking brings to every individual.
Strong hearts, healthy bones, increased muscle strength are all well-documented outcomes of walking, but the benefits for the mind are just as powerful. Increased sense of calm and self-esteem, time to connect with friends, family and the natural world, awakened creativity and improved overall cognitive function, phew! All that makes for a happy, healthy child set up for success in and out of the classroom!
Every pupil will be given a fun activity diary to record their journeys, daily stickers for the pupils that have taken part and badges which will be awarded at the end of the week for pupils who have taken part throughout the week.
We hope to see as many of you as possible taking part next week.
If you would like to find out more about the challenge you can visit www.livingstreets.org.uk/parents

Letter to parents and guardians: when you should book a coronavirus test for your child

Dear parents and guardians,
This is an important letter to share some information on how we can work together to make sure we can continue to give children and young people the best education in the safest way possible.
One important part of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of pupils, students, parents and our communities is testing for coronavirus. We all have a duty to make sure that the right people have access to get tested at the right time. Every time a test is used inappropriately, a person with COVID-19 symptoms may miss out on getting tested.
Therefore, I ask that you all follow these principles:
you should only book a test if your child has any of these 3 coronavirus symptoms:
a high temperature: any new high temperature where your child feels hot to touch on their chest or back (you do not need to measure the temperature)
a new continuous cough: coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
a loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste: a noticeable loss of smell or taste or things smell and taste different to normal
your child does not need a test if they have a runny nose, are sneezing or feeling unwell but do not have a temperature, cough or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste because these are not normally symptoms of coronavirus
if you are unsure about whether to get a test, please check the official list of symptoms on the NHS website, which is reviewed regularly
only the person with symptoms should get a test. You do not need to get a test for anyone else in the household unless they also have any of the 3 symptoms listed above. All members of the household need to self-isolate whilst waiting for the test result
if the person with symptoms’ test comes back positive, other members of their household should continue self-isolating for 14 days and only get a test if they develop coronavirus symptoms
if a pupil or student in a class or bubble tests positive for coronavirus, anyone who is advised to self-isolate does not require a test unless they subsequently develop symptoms.
No one else in the same class or bubble as the symptomatic person needs to take any action unless advised by the school or college. Schools and colleges have detailed guidance and access to a Department for Education and Public Health England helpline for advice and support.
Contacts of a person who has tested positive must follow the guidance carefully and in full, which means they must stay at home for 14 days. This is because it can take several days following contact with an infected person before an individual develops symptoms or the virus can be detected. Students should only book a test if they get symptoms.
The NHS has produced some guidance to help parents understand when their child can and cannot attend school which you may find useful.
It is vital for children and young people’s learning and future opportunities that they are able to return to school and college. It is therefore vitally important that all we work together and do our bit to make this possible.
Yours sincerely,
Professor Viv Bennett CBE
Chief Nurse and Director Maternity and Early Years, Public Health England

Virtual Sports Week - 06.07.20

We are determined to not miss out on some of the more exciting events we hold at the end of year whether you are at school or at home. Our annual 'Sports Day' is no different!
Next week we will be virtually hosting a week of fun 'Sports Day' activities. With just a few household items you’ll be all be able to take part, wherever you are. We’ve chosen activities that don’t require lots of space or fancy equipment, and don’t involve contact between children. But you are welcome to change the activities to suit your situation, the only thing that matters is that you get active and have fun!
Every day, next week, we will publish 2 activities (with video guides to show you what to do) that you can do in your home, garden, at a park or at school. You will need to record your results in a grid, which we will post to our Facebook for you to print at home or you can draw your own!
To make sure you are ready, here is a list of equipment you will need (if you don't have the exact same thing then use your imagination!):
- Monday: markers (can be literally anything), tape measure or a ruler
- Tuesday: marker, a target (bucket, large saucepan, washing up basin, etc), throwables (small beanbags, balled up socks, or anything throwable that doesn't bounce much), a spoon (big enough to hold an egg), a hard-boiled egg (or small ball).
- Wednesday: random objects to make an assault course, sacks (pillowcase, bin bag etc).
- Thursday: space to dance, a music player, 4 markers, timer
- Friday: an empty plastic 500ml water bottle, a table, a stick (short broom, cricket bat etc).

A big thank you to the staff!
The Local Authority were approached by the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT), requesting support as they construct visors for front line NHS workers, due to current shortages.
Having heard about this our amazing staff at the Learning Federation came into school today; set up a sterile environment and began to make the personal protective equipment.
They are working continuously to support the community and make a difference to the NHS.
Thank you staff!

Promoting good hygiene
With lots of colds and coughs this time of year in school we promote this advice to all:
1. Eat well- Ensuring children have a healthy and varied diet and eat lots of fruit and vegetables will help their immune system to be fit and healthy
2. Hand washing –Practicing effective hand washing after being outside, before eating and being around others is an effective way of minimising the spread of the cold virus and transferring it children themselves
3. Drinking water – Drinking plenty of water will ensure children’s bodies are hydrated, this will help children to feel fit and help their bodies to work correctly during the cold virus season
4. Dressing correctly – Wearing appropriate clothing (hats, gloves, coats) depending on whether you are indoors or outdoors will help children to maintain the right temperature, which will ensure they are ready for the cold virus
5. Preventing the spread of colds – Covering their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing and using a tissue if possible (wash hands afterwards). Adults should remind children to do this and help younger children. (Keeping a pack of tissues in their (of your) bag is always handy during winter! Alcohol gel can be beneficial but should be supervised at all times with young children.
6. Exercise- Keeping active can help the body to stay strong, fit and healthy, which can help to prevents colds, so ensuring children are active can be beneficial.

Mental Health awareness week
During mental health awareness week KS2 had an assembly to discuss what 'finding our brave' is really about.
Here are some of the keys messages that the children thought of:
- Being brave during tough times doesn’t mean holding it all in, not crying or pretending you are OK.
- Being brave during tough times doesn’t mean holding it all in, not crying or pretending you are OK.
- Being brave can also mean you have a go at something new. This could be joining a new sports club or learning a new skill.
- Being brave can also mean saying ‘no’ to something that isn’t good for our physical or mental health.
- It can also mean stepping outside of your comfort zone and challenging yourself.
The children have been reflecting upon this phrase all week and have produced some fantastic work in classes to support this very important event.
