 Wales Class had a lovely time at the library this afternoon.  They spent time there looking at the huge selection of books before choosing one to take back to school.

Year 2 visit the local library!

 Last week Year 2 walked to our local library and thought about how the library is a free resource that we can easily use and enjoy. It is so important to develop the children's Literacy skills and love of reading from an early age and the library can do this.  All the children took home an application form and chose a book to take back to school to enjoy.

A real life superhero comes to Mead

The children in year one have been learning about superheroes this half term.  As part of our topic they learnt about real life heroes - otherwise known as 'people who help us'.  As a special treat they received a visit from PC Wayne who told them all about the role of a police officer.  He also showed them his uniform and many different gadgets.  The year ones then had the opportunity to ask PC Wayne questions.  The children had a great time and were super excited to meet a real life superhero!

  

Year 2 Newspaper Sculpture

Who would have thought that a material like newspaper could construct a strong structure like a castle.

Yesterday, to the children's amazement Darcy a visiting artist helped year 2 do this. The children worked together demonstrating reciprocity, resilience and great problem solving skills as they rolled and compressed newspaper in special machines that Darcy had invented. Then the strong sticks they made fixed together to create a sculpture of a castle. We have been learning about castles and William the conqueror in our history lessons. We don't think William the Conqueror would have wanted a paper castle but it was great fun creating one for us that even has the battlements at the top. This castle will be used in the outside learning environment so the children can enjoy their efforts.

Across the continents and oceans of the world!

On Monday, the children were visited by Caitlin from The Freshwater Theatre Company, who took them on a magical adventure around the world. We visited the Grand Canyon in North America, Sugarloaf mountain in South America, Victoria Falls in Africa, the Northern Lights in Europe, met the penguins in Antarctica, climbed Mount Everest in Asia and swam in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We travelled across the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern and Arctic oceans by boat, plane, hot air balloon and jet ski. The children had a fantastic time and learnt lots about each continent and ocean on the way. This brilliant workshop inspired lots of work this week and we were amazed by how much the children could remember. 

"Asia is my favorite continent because I was born there!" said Visha excitedly. 

Story time with Wilf

On Monday this week, the children in year 1 were visited by an amazing storyteller called Wilf. Wilf spent time in each class performing a story he had written, before making up a story altogether with the children. The story linked to the children's current theme, 'Under the Sea' and some of the them thoroughly enjoyed acting as the main characters. The children came up with some fantastic ideas and Wilf was very impressed with their knowledge about sea animals! The stories the children created with Wilf have inspired some magnificent writing in their Big Write today, as you can see below...

"I want to be a storyteller when I'm older!", exclaimed Angelo.

 

Year 2 have had visitors!

Year 2 had a special delivery on the 15th March. An incubator and eggs arrived as part of the Living Eggs project.  The children excitedly waited in anticipation until our first arrival hatched on Wednesday the 17th shortly followed by the other chicks. 

The children have had an amazing time linking their work to the chicks as well as getting close to them and caring for them.

They have wrote about the life cycle of a hen, written poems using alliteration and similes as well as taking and editing photos of these cute little chicks. 

Sadly we had to say goodbye to them on Friday as they were returned to the farm.

 

PC Wayne Visits Year One.

On Monday, year 1 were visited by a real-life superhero, PC Wayne from the Metropolitan police. He talked to the children about the role of a policeman in the community. The children enjoyed seeing his different hats and cool gadgets. Year 1 asked lots of interesting questions and listened intently to PC Wayne. It sparked many discussions and role play games.

"I want to be a policeman when I grow up so I can catch the bad guys!" declared Andrey.
