Heroes Stamp Design Competition!

KS2 are entering the Royal Mail Heroes stamp design competition!

 The pupils are designing stamps for a special collection honouring heroes of the pandemic. This has been done in school and to a very high standard.

Below is a form for parents regarding parental permission (a copy has also been sent home with all pupils entering the competition). Please read it carefully and ask your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Mathletics Competition

 

As we are all learning from home at the moment , we thought we would run an in school Mathletics competition. Each week we will be publishing on the blog and the school Facebook page the 5 children from Reception/Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, who have earnt the most points each week. The scores will run from Friday each week until the following Thursday.

The winning class will also be published.

We are determined to not miss out on some of the more exciting events we hold at the end of year whether you are at school or at home. Our annual 'Sports Day' is no different!

Next week we will be virtually hosting a week of fun 'Sports Day' activities. With just a few household items you’ll be all be able to take part, wherever you are. We’ve chosen activities that don’t require lots of space or fancy equipment, and don’t involve contact between children. But you are welcome to change the activities to suit your situation, the only thing that matters is that you get active and have fun!

Every day, next week, we will publish 2 activities (with video guides to show you what to do) that you can do in your home, garden, at a park or at school. You will need to record your results in a grid, which we will post to our Facebook for you to print at home or you can draw your own!

To make sure you are ready, here is a list of equipment you will need (if you don't have the exact same thing then use your imagination!):

• Monday: markers (can be literally anything), tape measure or a ruler
• Tuesday: marker, a target (bucket, large saucepan, washing up basin, etc), throwables (small beanbags, balled up socks, or anything throwable that doesn't bounce much), a spoon (big enough to hold an egg), a hard-boiled egg (or small ball).
• Wednesday: random objects to make an assault course, sacks (pillowcase, bin bag etc).
• Thursday: space to dance, a music player, 4 markers, timer 
• Friday: an empty plastic 500ml water bottle, a table, a stick (short broom, cricket bat etc).

At the end of the week, you can submit your results to us and we will announce winners from each class. Make sure you take lots of photographs and videos to share with us, we can't wait to see you having fun! Stay tuned for more details to follow!

February Mathletics Awards

Well done to all of the children that attempted Mathletics during February. The following children in Key Stage 2 received their Bronze award Alexandra and Amelia from Chile class, Wilson in Argentina, Pritika in Brazil, Adem, Pawel and Wajeeha in Mexico, Tomi and Anya in Canada, Ellie in U.S.A, Dinuki and Benjamin in Greece, Andriana in Germany, Daniel and Milana in Italy, Ema and Ithiel in Scotland, Amin and Leona in Northern Ireland and Kevin in Wales.

Well done to Alexandra in Chile, who also received her silver award. 

The winning class for February was Chile.

Well done Tommy!

In the Autumn term there was a Veggie Run competition in which one child that had a school dinner every day from 09/10/19 – 18/10/19 would have the chance of winning a £160 Halfords voucher. Tommy in Wales was the lucky winner of this competition.  

Tommy said “It’s amazing, I can’t wait to ride it on the weekend!”.

Sunday lunch is on Veggie Run this year

 I am excited to announce that from Monday 23 September any pupil who eats a healthy catered school lunch, will be in with a chance of winning  a ‘Veggie Run Family Roast Dinner Box’ worth £25 to cook at home. This amazing prize will be awarded to a different pupil every Friday throughout the school academic year who has eaten a school catered lunch that week.   

Veggie Run roast dinner boxes will feed 4-6 people, and will include either 2kg Topside beef, a whole Chicken, pork loin or Turkey from our Butchers William White Meats Ltd and Vegetables from our supplier Prescott Thomas Ltd. Pupils and their family can then follow the Veggie Run roast dinner recipe cards to create a wholesome healthy meal.

Win a day at Stubbers

The top six schools to show the highest school meal uptake during the autumn school term will also win a class activity day for 30 pupils to Stubbers Adventure Centre plus free transport on:

·         Friday 27 March

·         Monday 30 March

·         Tuesday 31 March

The activity days will be a great opportunity for children to develop their independence, confidence and problem solving skills outside of the classroom and participate in:

·         Archery

·         Climbing

·         Bush craft

·         or woodland construction.

New Veggie Run Competition

60 Bikes to be won

KS2 pupils who eat a healthy catered school lunch until Friday 18 October will be in with a chance of winning a new bike from our friends at Halfords.

Winning pupils will each receive a £160 Halfords gift voucher after the half term break which can be redeemed against:

If You Were An Engineer What Would You Do?

Mead school entered the ‘If You Were An Engineer What Would You Do?’ awards. This is a competition for all school aged pupils and its purpose is to raise the profile of engineering as a career. The competition was explained in an assembly and those interested had to come up with a problem they wanted to solve and a way of solving it. They had to draw a diagram of their invention, label it and write a supporting letter. We had about 20 entries which were sent off to Birmingham to be judged. There were over 2,000 entries in the London area and 190 were shortlisted.

Sport Relief Mile - Thursday 11th July 2019

On Thursday 11th July the children will be completing a mile to raise money for Sport Relief. This will take place during the school day on the Key Stage 2 field and playground. The sponsorship money will be going to two amazing causes: Limited Resource Teacher Training, which Miss Pountney is volunteering with this Summer in Laos and money will also be raised to maintain our lovely school farm.


Please complete the sponsorship form and return to your child/children’s teacher, along with any money, in a sealed envelope on the day of the Sport Relief mile. If every child raised £1 we would raise over £500 for these very worthy causes!


The class that raises the most money will receive an extra PE lesson in the last week from Mr Robinson or Mr Stanbridge as a thank you gesture.

MEAD CYCLING CHAMPION

 Ryan Jackson – Road Cycling -  London Youth Games 2019-Sunday 16th June

The London Youth Games is an annual sporting event were children across the London boroughs compete in many different sports. The road cycling event for the 2019 LYG took place on Sunday 16th June at the Lee Valley Velopark, this being the venue of the 2012 Olympic games track racing events. The facility has a 1 mile road circuit that typically hosts road cycling events through the year.  Ryan Jackson (11 years old, year 6), representing Havering and his school Mead Primary, took part in the road event in the u12 time trial event along with 60 other competitors.  Ryan is very familiar with the circuit, having raced it several times in road race events and also individually in time trials, something which he excels at.  The time trial is a race against the clock, with individual riders starting on their own with 1 minute intervals separating the riders. The aim; set the fastest time for the course.  The distance for the race on Sunday was for just under 2 miles on the road circuit, a relatively short distance for Ryan who is typically riding 10 mile time trials.

The first rider off, Samual Little (Lewisham) set the initial mark at 6:07.098, this was swiftly bettered by Freddy Augsburger (Hackney) with a time 5:21.041. Ryan started 5 minutes after Freddy at number 13, thankfully no bad luck for Ryan, as he stormed around the course. Ryan's time of 5:12.688 flashed up on the electronic timing score board, over 8 seconds faster than Freddy, which was enough to take him to the top spot and a earned him a place in what is known as the “hot seat” in time trial events. This was accompanied by an agonising wait as he watched the times of the remaining riders flash up on the screen (though watching a screen is something that Ryan also does very well).

As it was only one other rider, Aaron Harris (Bromley) was able to get any closer with a time of 5:20.120, which meant that Ryan held on to take the gold medal in this event by just over 7 seconds.

Ryan's performance was exceptional, it is not an easy event requiring a great deal of technique, endurance and speed. However the level of concentration for this event is something that even an adult would find very hard, mistakes add up very quickly and the margins for winning are not that great.  Ryan trains very hard for his cycling events, having racked up around 4,000km last year and often reaches speeds of 60 km/h.  The average speed of Ryan's ride on Sunday was 36.842 km/h (23 mph).

This event was a once in a lifetime chance for Ryan and we are all very proud that he was able to take the opportunity and produce such a wonderful ride and memories that will last a lifetime.

Dear Parents,
Next week between Monday 13th May-Thursday 16th May our year 6 pupils will be taking their SATs tests. They are invited into school for a free breakfast and an opportunity to relax with their peers from 7:45am onwards on these days as we want to make the test as stress free as possible.

The year 2 team are planning to start the year 2 SATs tests next week as well-so everyone is going to be very busy Teachers across both year groups assure me the children are well prepared-so good luck to everyone-I know they will all try their very best.


GDPR-Have you returned the form?
The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) comes into force on 25th May this year.
As you are no doubt aware, schools handle a large amount of personal data. This includes information on pupils, such as grades, medical information, images and much more. Data handling is already governed by existing DPA regulations, which ensure personal data is handled lawfully. However, the new GDPR has gone further and requires organisations to document how and why they process all personal data, and gives enhanced rights to the individual. For this reason it is essential GDPR forms are completed for every pupil attending Mead.

Italy and Germany in LKS2 and Australia and Palau in KS1 all tied for 2nd place with attendance of 96.7%. Well done to them! The overall attendance was disappointing at 94.2% still below our target!

Monday 1st April- This is the last week of swimming for our year 4 pupils this term. Germany class are visiting the Sealife centre in Southend and Miss Pountney will be leading Laos assemblies to inform pupils of the amazing charity venture she is undertaking this coming summer, which, as a school, we are supporting.

Tuesday 2nd April-Autism awareness day-Mrs Jolly will be holding assemblies on this theme for pupils across both Key Stages -This is especially important as our new ARP is due to open very soon. some of our older pupils will be attending a Basketball competition at Emerson Park and Greece class will be visiting the Sealife centre in Southend. Madagascar class will be spending the day at Raphael’s Park. Year 3 parents/carers are invited into school between 14:30 and 15:00 for a reading afternoon. After school our netball team will be playing a match against Pyrgo.

Wednesday 3rd April-Egypt class will be visiting Raphael’s Park whilst Italy class are going to the Sealife centre in Southend. Nursery parents are invited to come and visit Mead farm between 11:00 and 11:30 and 14:00 and 14:30. Reception parents are invited to come and see our farm between 13:45 and 14:45.

Thursday 4th April- Brazil class will be spending the morning at MOD Pizza in Romford. Kenya class will be visiting Raphael’s Park. Parents of year 1 and 2 pupils are invited to visit Mead farm between 13:45 and 14:45.

Weekly Newsletter 22nd March 2019

Dear Parents,

Great news! At last our nursery is finished and staff have been busy this week moving resources and furniture in preparation for Monday, when the children will be moving back in. Whilst we acknowledge that there has been some disruption over the last few months, having seen the final result, it was all worthwhile as we now have a fantastic space for our youngest children to enjoy.

We look forward to welcoming nursery parents next Friday at 10:30am for the grand opening.

Please can I remind you that school finishes at 3:00pm for KS1 and EYFS and 3:10pm for KS2.
We have an increasing number of children being collected late which is causing congestion in our reception area, for this reason parents arriving late will in future need to go to their children’s classroom for collection. It is your responsibility to collect your child on time and I need to advise you that we will be involving outside agencies for those children whose parents are persistently late collecting them.

LFPA
Once again the LFPA are selling items in school for the pupils to purchase for Mother’s Day. The children should have brought order forms home this week, but more information is available on the blog/facebook if you need it.

Parent evenings-Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th April

Message from Veggie Run
Just a reminder of Mead School code 7709 which you need to create a Veggie Run account. You need to sign up if you want the chance to win one of our fabulous prizes.

We still have four ‘Learning Outside of the Classroom’ activity days at Stubbers Adventure Centre to be won on the 27, 28 and 29 March (2 schools on the same day). This is a class trip for 30 pupils, plus free transport to and from the venue. The four new schools to show the highest percentage meal uptake against role number will be awarded the prizes on the 20 March.

Also, I am pleased to tell you that one of your pupils has won a West Ham United Foundation Voucher.
