Year 6 Tower Challenge

As part of our independent experiments unit, the children were given the challenge to build secure sky scrapers using only spaghetti and marshmallows. We began by looking at different towers from around the world and children discuss where and why particular shapes are used in specific environments. They then went on to use this knowledge to design, build and evaluate their own constructions. This challenge linked science, design and technology and mathematics as children use problem-solving strategies.

Print and Activism!

In year 6 art, children were introduced to the idea that they can use art as a way of sharing their passions and interests with their peers and community.

We started by introducing them to artists who are activists, and then we helped pupils identify and voice the things they care about as individuals.  Then the classes made posters using collage, print and drawing.

Here are some of the finished posters!

WWII in Year 6

In Year 6, the children have been studying World War II. Paige brought in her great-grandfather's World War II army kit bag, a tangible relic from the past that captured the attention and imagination of the entire class. The bag, adorned with personal touches, became a portal into history for the students. Paige shared an extraordinary family story, recounting how her great grandad was captured in Italy during the war, enduring imprisonment and was eventually rescued and released by American forces. Thank you Paige for sharing this with us.

Investigating the Law of Reflection

Year 6 have been investigating the law of reflection this week. We discovered that a ray of incidence is the ray of light that hits a surface whereas a reflective ray is the ray that bounces off of a surface. During their investigation, the children found out that the angle of reflection equals to the angle of incidence.

Year 6 play leader training

A massive well done to all the new Year 6 Play Leaders who completed their training this week. The play leaders will be leading activities at playtime and helping sports activities throughout the school. Additionally, I would like to share the feedback from the Playleader Trainer -
The Sports Crew at Mead are a credit to the school . Attentive , sensible , kind and enthusiastic. They listened well throughout the session and played all the practical warm up games in true , fair spirit .
When the year 3 class came to join us, again they were very helpful towards the younger children and encouraged them throughout the session.
When we did our media investigation & took a look at the virtual work, they were very forthcoming with ideas and feedback . It was such a happy morning for everyone!
For me it was an absolute delight to work with these children at Mead this morning.
The young lady that escorted me back through the school to the school office was very polite and chatted to me all the way to the door .
I would return to work at Mead in a heart beat.
