KARATE CLASSES AT MEAD

  

We run a karate club at Mead Primary School every Thursday straight after school until 4.50pm.

Karate is for all ages from year one. During some lessons we also teach Jiu-Jitsu and Kobudo.

Our instructors are all fully qualified, insured, have enhanced DBS checks and first aid training, copies of which are held with the school.

All our classes adhere to the government Covid-19 guidelines, and school Covid-19 policy.


COSTS: For the first two taster lessons, the fee is £20, to see if your child likes Karate and wants to join.

If you do want to continue, the fee is £80 per half term to be paid at the start of each half term.

Dear Parents,
The past 6 weeks seem to have flown by and already we are halfway through the academic year.

Advice for parents/guardians from the DFE (Dept. of Education
You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your children catching the Coronavirus.
There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal.

Havering Catering Services
Week beginning Monday 24th February is week 3 on the Havering catering services menu. All meals are served with unlimited salad and vegetables and cost £2.25.
Please be reminded to top up your child’s catering account as we cannot provide dinners for pupils whose accounts exceed a debt of £10.
Havering catering Service now provides a breakfast club for Mead pupils. For £1.50 your child can have a bacon or sausage sandwich or beans on toast or cereal or toast or fresh fruit or yoghurt plus a drink.
We will also have speciality days when other items such as pancakes and muffins will be available.
In order for you to book a place you will need to deposit the money in advance in your Squid account.
Please do not send your child to school to attend breakfast club if there are no funds in your account as they will not be admitted.

Attendance update
Well done to Mexico class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 96.7% . Germany had the highest attendance in LKS2 and overall at 97.9% and Australia had the highest attendance in KS1 at 97.3%. Well done to them!. The overall attendance was disappointing at only 94% which is well below our target! Hopefully we’ll do better next half term.


I hope everyone has a good restful week and that the children will return ready on Monday 24th February for another very busy 6 weeks on the run up to Easter.

Swimming star in Barbados class

A HUGE well done to Mia in Barbados class for completing her level 1 in swimming and moving up to orange group.

Your perseverance and hard work has paid off Mia! Keep up the good work and we look forward to hearing more good news from you soon.

Friend Club

Friend club in Autumn is going as strong as ever. Children can invite a new friend and share games, rockstars, mathletics, chess, and creative projects such as drawing, colouring, and sculptures made of Plasticine.

'I like going to friend club,' said Austeja. 'It's fun and it means I don't get lonely outside.'

To be part of Friend Club, a child can choose a new friend that they would like to spend some time with, and attend at 1pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Every year is welcome.

Dance awards

Well done to Chloe in year 5 who has won many medals for dancing over the past few weeks. Her medals are for different types of dance including: ballet, tap and modern.

Tennis Trophy

Well done to Jacob in year 5 who won a trophy for showing resilience and good sportsmanship at his tennis club. Usually this award goes to older players but Jacob's excellent attitude towards his sport earned him the trophy this year.

Dear Parents,

A huge congratulations to Mr Robinson and Mr Stanbridge and all of the pupils who took part in the Primary sports day at Drapers’ Academy on Monday. We are thrilled and extremely proud to announce that Mead Primary came second overall. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all.

Due to circumstances beyond our control the LFPA have had to change the date of the summer fete. It will now be on Friday 5th July from 14:00-17:00 at Broadford School. Parents wishing to attend the fete will be able to collect their children from Mead at 14:00. I will be sending out a letter nearer the time to ascertain which children will need to be dismissed earlier but please be advised pupils leaving early MUST be collected by their parent/carer.

Monday 24th June-The Paddington Bear Book Club are going to Broadford to watch the film this morning while the Christopher Robin Book club will be enjoying the film at Mead this afternoon

Tuesday 25th June-The ‘Bug man is in school for our Reception children and during the morning we are hosting the Infant Music Festival.

Wednesday 26th June- Year 2 are spending the day at The Tower of London while some of our Year 6 and year 4 children are going to Dunton to represent Mead at the Ford Engineering challenge.
In the afternoon year 6 are attending a Junior Citizens event and some of our year 3 children will be attending a Forest School session. After school (at 18:00) our new Reception parents are invited into school for an information meeting. 

Thursday 27th June - Some of our pupils will be representing Mead at a Cricket Tournament at Draper’s Pyrgo and Year 6 are going to the Metro bank in Romford. Our Harry Potter club are looking forward to a very exciting trip- visiting the Harry Potter Studios Trip. Dear Parents,

Happy New Year

I would like to wish a happy New Year to you all and I hope that you all enjoyed a relaxing and restful break. This year we want all of our children to be stronger, braver and kinder. If they achieve all this they will be unstoppable and this will be their best year yet! Together we can help our pupils achieve this. I am very excited about, what I am sure will be an amazing 2019.

We are welcoming some new staff members this term. Mr Elliott is the new teacher in Germany class and we are looking forward to being joined by two additional support staff member Mrs Ahmed and Miss Knight who will be joining us in the near future.

We are also welcoming 2 new additions to our farm this year. Our goats have been joined by 2 very friendly sheep - Hazel and Jimmy. Hazel is still only very young and is black and white. Jimmy is older and all white. We will have farm open days again this term so you can get to meet them . In the meantime we will post pictures of them on the blog and on our facebook page.

School Census
In the month of January we complete the school census which determines the amount of funding the school receives.

For every pupil who is eligible for Free School Meals, our school receives funding of £1,300 per year for six years. Even KS1 children who receive Universal Free School Meals may still be eligible for this funding. If your child is eligible for this funding you would also receive:

• £40 voucher per child, per year to assist with the cost of school uniform redeemable at Premier Schoolwear.

• Assistance with contributions towards school trips and residential visits.

• After school clubs can continue to be free of charge. 

If you are receipt of one of the following you are eligible. Please visit the school office and see Mrs Parker.

• Income Support
• Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• Income related employment and support allowance
• Support under part VI of the Immigration & Asylum Act 1999
• Child Tax Credit ( provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and whose annual income (as assessed by the Revenue and Customs) does not exceed £16,190.

In ‘Join up January’ – good news from libraries!
Havering Library Service no longer charge children library fines for books taken out on their tickets and as it’s ‘Join up January’ we hope this will encourage you to join your child to your local library and take advantage of all the thousands of free story books, factual books and e-books that it offers. Reading for pleasure is an important part of your child’s development and helps them to develop socially, cognitively and emotionally.

Pupil Jobs and Homework Expectations

As it is a new year we thought it would be a good time to revisit our pupil, parents and staff expectations.

Pupils are expected to:

1. Turn up every day on time
2. Do their best in every lesson
3. Be kind and polite to everyone that they meet


Parents and carers are expected to:

1. Ensure that our children arrive on time for school and ready to learn:

         a. Will have provided children with a healthy breakfast

         b. Ensure they have warm clean clothing
         c. Make sure they have the right equipment for school (book bag, reading record, PE kit)

2. We will support our children’s learning at home through:
         a. Reading regularly
         b. Helping them to practise their spellings and mental maths
         c. Encouraging them in their interests

3. We will model politeness and kindness to everyone we meet

We will ensure that our staff are professional, approachable and focused on making sure that every child in their care achieves their full potential. Working together we can continue to deliver outstanding results for our pupils so that they have every chance of going on to succeed at the next stage of their education.

All pupils are expected to continue their learning at home. For children in years 1-6 there are three core elements for this:

• Pupils must read every night 15 mins (this may involve an adult reading them a bedtime story)
• Pupils must practise their spellings for 15 mins ready for the test on Friday
• Pupils must practise their times tables for 15 mins a night

In addition to this we have a Homework Bingo/Learning Challenge which is set by every Year group. This helps to give ideas on how the children can enrich their learning by looking at specific paintings, composers, poems and significant people. We would anticipate that it takes around 4-6 weeks for your child to complete the activities. They choose to do this and can take on as many elements as they wish.

Reception Admissions September 2019
If your child is looking to join our school in Reception 2019 it is vital that you get your application completed by 15th January or it is likely you will miss out. YOU MUST APPLY! Attending our Nursery will have no impact on your application. Many parents mistakenly believe that a place in the Nursery = a place in Reception… it doesn’t!

Well done to Chile class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 100% . Wales and Greece shared the highest attendance in LKS2 at 97.8% and Egypt had the highest attendance in KS1 at 100%. Well done to them!. The overall attendance has greatly improved (and is actually above our target) at 96.5%.

A massive well done to Chile and Egypt classes your fantastic effort will be rewarded with a cupcake party

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of regular attendance:

• Attendance has a direct link to attainment. If a child is not in school regularly they are not fully accessing the curriculum and learning opportunities available to them.

• Achieving at school builds a child’s self-esteem, as well as enhancing their future prospects.

• Attending school and being part of the school’s community gives a child a sense of belonging and promotes their social development.

• Spending time with school staff teaches a child about society’s expectations with regards to behaviour and how to communicate with people in authority preparing them for adult life.

• Attending school gives a child the opportunity to experience positive separation from their parent(s)/carer(s), which builds their confidence and resistance

Weekly Newsletter - 30th November 2018

Dear Parents,
A massive well done to Mrs Kumszczynska, Mr Gowers and the school choir for their wonderful singing at the Hilldene Christmas lights event last night. I know those present were really impressed with the quality of singing and despite the technical hitch, when the accompanying music stopped, they carried on. Occasions such as this make me very proud to be the headteacher of Mead School.

Mr Stanbridge and Mr Robinson accompanied pupils to two sporting events this week. Our Indoor athletic team finished fourth out of 34 schools -a fantastic achievement! Our Basketball team came against some tough opposition from other schools in our cluster but came away with a fantastic trophy as they were overall winners-Very well done to everyone involved.

We are looking forward to welcoming parents/carers next week for our farm ‘Open Afternoons’ when you’ll get a chance to meet Bobby the pony, Paige, Bertie and Blue the goats, along with our chickens, ducks, rabbits and guinea pigs. We are having a dress up ‘Animal Day’on Friday 7th December when we would like pupils to come to school dressed as their favourite animals and bring a small donation which we will put towards the running costs of the farm.

Monday 3rd December-Last week of swimming this term. Some of our child will be competing in the para bowling competition with Mrs Jolly. During this afternoon some of our year 4 pupils will be joining pupils from Broadford and Brookside for the 4th Mary Poppins History Session at Draper’s Brookside. Between 13:30 and 14:30 Parents of Reception and year 1 pupils are invited to the Mead Farm Open Afternoon.

Tuesday 4th December-Germany class will be visiting MOD Pizza in Romford. Between 10:45 and 11:15 and 14;30 and 15:00 Nursery parents are invited to visit the Mead Farm. The West Ham Health Programme sessions for year 4 pupils will continue this afternoon

Wednesday 5th December- Argentina class are visiting the Royal Courts of Justice in London today. This afternoon sees the last of our Forest Schools sessions for this term. Year 2 parents are invited in to visit the Mead Farm between 13:30 and 14:30, while year 4 parents are invited into school between 14:00 and 15:00 for their showcase.

Thursday 6th December- Chile and Brazil classes are visiting the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Year 5 Parents and carers are invited into school for their showcase between 14:15 and 15;00.

Friday 7th December-Animal Dress Up Day. Reception parents/carers are invited into school for their stay and play session today. Parents/Carers of our year 3 and 4 pupils are invited into school to visit our wonderful farm between 13:30 and 14:30. The last Habit after school club is this evening -but they’ll be back in the spring term.

NUMBER NINJAS

Number Ninjas Club has got off to a great start this term.  This week the more able mathematicians got their brains warmed up by playing a number bonds game on the interactive whiteboard. All of the children attempted to improve on their personal best score.  They then played darts, which enabled them to add multiples of ten together.  Some of the children even used the column method, which they have recently learned in class, to work out their totals.

"I like it when I win the games" commented Yanis.

"I love it when the teachers join in too" added Dami.

Weekly Newsletter- 23rd November 2018

Dear Parents,
Our younger children thoroughly enjoyed meeting the author Abie Longstaff today. I did put a message on the blog/facebook about buying books but I appreciate it was short notice. Mrs Horsham has agreed to have some of her books for sale in the reception area after school on Monday for anyone who missed the initial message.

Mrs Napier has kindly sorted the lost property out for us and the good news is that named items will be returned to your children today. However, we have an abundance of unnamed jumpers/cardigans, T-Shirts etc. -If your child has lost items in school this term you will have the opportunity to reclaim them from the KS2 playground after school on Monday.

Monday 26th November -2 of our JTAs will be attending a STARs seminar at The Oval in recognition of all the hard work our travel team have done in retaining their GOLD award. During the afternoon some of our year 4 pupils will be attending the 3rd of the Mary Poppins history sessions.

Tuesday 27th November -The first of our Autism Parents Network coffee mornings will be held at Mead between 9:00 and 10:00. Italy class will be going to MOD Pizza in Romford during the morning and Year 3 parents are invited into school for the year 3 showcase between 14:00 and 15:00. Year 4 pupils will be attending the West Ham Health Programme sessions during the afternoon.

Wednesday 26th-Some of our pupils will be representing Mead at the Sports Hall Athletics event at Hornchurch Sports centre in the afternoon while some year 3 pupils will be attending a Forest School session at Mead

Thursday 29th November-Some of our older pupils will be taking part in a Basketball competition at Draper’s Academy during the morning while others will be cycling with Phil. During the afternoon our year 1 Spinebreakers will be going to Waterstones in Romford. Parents/carers of year 6 pupils are invited into school for their showcase between 14:15 and 15:00. After school our Football team will be playing a match against Broadford. We are thrilled that our choir will be contributing to the celebrations at Hilldene for the switching on of the lights-They will be singing at approx 4;45pm- would be lovely if some of you could join us to support them.

Havering Catering Services
Week beginning Monday 26th November is week 2 on the Havering catering services menu. All meals are served with unlimited salad and vegetables and cost £2.20. Meals are free to our KS1/EYFS pupils.

Please be reminded to top up your child’s catering account as we cannot provide dinners for pupils whose accounts exceed a debt of £10.

Attendance Update
Well done to Argentina class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 at 95.7% . N. Ireland had the highest attendance in LKS2 and overall at 99% and Palau and Madagascar shared the highest attendance score in KS1 at 97.9%. Well done to them!. The overall attendance was disappointing at only 94.9% which is below our target!
