Weekly Newsletter - 20th January 2020
Dear Parents,
Please be reminded that pupils can come into school from 8:30 but MUST be in for registration at 8:50. An increasing number of children are arriving late, which causes disruption to the classes and is distressing for the children who have to walk into the rooms after lessons have started.
Ofsted inspectors look at attendance and punctuality figures and these can have a negative effect on a school’s final judgement so please make an effort to ensure ALL children are in school on time.
Also-an increasing number of pupils are being collected late from school. Please be reminded that KS1 pupils should be collected at 15:00 and KS2 pupils at 15:10 (unless they are attending a club). Unfortunately, if parents are late collecting their children from clubs I will have to consider if the child can continue to attend. In extreme cases I will refer to social care, as on occasions we are having to wait beyond the time we would normally go home for a parent/relative to collect a child.

Welcome Student Council 2018/19!
On Monday, the 2018/19 Mead Student Council held their inaugural meeting.
These students were chosen in a secret ballot by their classmates for their kindness, diligence and sense of responsibility.
'I was excited when I heard my name,' said Nicole, from Northern Ireland class. 'I'm excited to do the projects and meet other kids.'
The council hit the ground running, and many students showed great promise as elected officials by bringing suggestions from their classmates to the table.
Mead has a successful and productive year to look forward to - congratulations to all our councilors.

Thank you for our goats
Our donation from WE Create Change was matched to the Oloirien community in Kenya.
The community of Oloirien is located in Narok South District, in the Rift Valley of Kenya. The population is approximately 3,000 people, comprised of Maasai, Kiisi and Tugen ethnic groups coexisting peacefully. In the last 30 years, the community has had a history of drought and famine, most recently suffering from both in 2007 and 2011. Community members lack the capacity to cope with these unexpected weather changes and factors threatening their livelihoods. About 22% of primary school aged children are not attending school.
Our goats will help the community to raise essential funds to provide food, water and education for the children.
Thank you

Weekly Newsletter-6th July 2018
Dear Parents,
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the special events we held this week.
The weather stayed fine for our sports events which were really well attended and it seemed that a good time was had by all. It was lovely to welcome parents/carers to the Mead Farm and I have been inundated with positive comments about the provision. Also many of you have been able to celebrate the hard work our children have put in this term through the year group showcases-What a busy week we’ve had!
The school fete last Saturday was well attended and I would like to extend my thanks to the LFPA who worked really hard to organise it and raised in excess of £800 to support the schools.
Pupils will be bringing their reports home next Friday 13th July, and not on Monday as originally planned. This is so that you can be fully informed of your child’s attainment, as some test results will not be available until after Monday. If, after reading your child’s report, you want to discuss the content with the teacher we have allocated Monday 16th July 15:30-18:00 for parents meetings.

Houses of Parliament
The tour started with a 15 minute 360 degree high production film taking us through key events in the changing history of UK Parliament. We found out many facts about the building and the formation of Parliament. 'That was such a good film', announced Elizabeth.
We then went to explore the Palace of Westminster, learning about the work of Parliament today. During our visit we were able to walk up the same steps as the Queen used to use, but now she uses a lift! We saw the room where she puts on her robes for the State Opening of Parliament and the throne made for Queen Victoria, it was quite small. Following that, we were shown into the House of Lords. 'I like all the gold in here' said Jason. It was very shiny! We discovered that the Lords come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Louis was impressed, stating that 'If you became good at your job, you could be a Lord!' Unfortunately the House of Commons were sitting for Prime Minister's Questions and we could not go in. Raul said that he would like to come back and watch a debate in the House of Lords one day, especially when he found out that it was free! We went through The Central Lobby to Westminster Hall, last remaining part of the original Palace almost 1000 years old.
It was a lovely day and the children received many positive comments about their behaviour, knowledge and enthusiastic questioning. Mrs Jolly and Mrs Commer were very proud.

Mead Farm - Julia Lopez MP Visit
Mead Farm had a visit from Julia Lopez MP just before the holidays. Julia had heard about the initiative to promote pupil leadership and provide an environment that would support the nurture needs of existing pupils and those due to attend the new Additional Resourced Provision (ARP).
Our School Council and Farm Leaders gave Julia the tour, and helped her to get hands on: grooming Mr Darcy & Betsy and feeding the goats.
It is clear to see how the farm environment, and outdoor learning opportunities have already made a real difference to pupils.
Julia Lopez MP
Tommy, who has been one of our leading farm hands, told Julia and the other guests about the typical daily routine required to take care of all the animals. He then showed them the enclosures for the rabbits, which Julia seemed very taken with!

New KS2 Play Equipment
Our KS2 pupils were delighted with the new additions to the playground this half term. Following on from the installation of the gym equipment - which was chosen by the school council - the pupils had the chance to select which elements they wanted added to the space.
We really wanted somewhere that you could use as an imagination space... the tunnels are perfect. There isn't anywhere in the playground where you can go if you want a bit of quiet time or if you want to pretend - Chloe Year 5
Many of the pupils also voted to have some equipment that allowed them to do some climbing.
We have seen the tree house in the Reception outdoor area. We wanted some equipment to climb on
- Daniel Year 4
This won't be the end of the additions to the KS2 playground. As our pupil numbers continue to grow we will add additional equipment for the children to enjoy. Sine adding:

Shout out from the Mayor of London
On Thursday some Mead and Broadford children were invited to City Hall to find out how the Mayor runs London. After a security check they were shown a large aerial map of London taken from the International Space Station. Their task was to locate football grounds, airports, their school and their house. It was very interesting and most of the children were successful. The children were then taken to a room to learn about the responsibilities of the Mayor and given a brief history of London. During the morning the children also found out that the iconic shape of City Hall is an energy saving feature and they were given some amazing facts about London.
Can you answer these questions?
- How much money is the Mayor of London given to spend on Londoners every year?
- What is the population of London?
- What is the majority of the Mayor's budget spent on?
Suddenly a call came through and we were invited into the assembly room to sit in on a meeting of the London Assembly who were discussing the Mayor's Transport Strategy. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, was there to answer questions with his transport advisers. One of the items discussed was the accessibility of trains and buses to everyone. Then to our surprise the Chair of the assembly, Jeanette Arnold, stopped the meeting and introduced us to the assembly members. We got a wave and a round of applause. 'We got a shout out in City Hall!' exclaimed some of the excited children after we had left the chambers.
The children all agreed that London was an amazing city, 'It is a special city because it looks lovely at night' said Tamara. Raul pointed out that it had lots of tourist attractions. Abdullah was able to answer many of the questions regarding the political parties and announced that he wanted to be a politician and Jessica is aiming to be Prime Minister. The visit to City Hall has inspired many of the children to take an interest in local government and Raul announced 'I'm into politics now!'
Answers: £17bn, 9 million, transport

The School Council's Fabulous Fundraising
Well done to the school council who spent their lunch times and after school decorating and selling cup cakes for The Goat That Gives Back campaign. Thanks to their efforts and your generous support and donations, they raised £180 and will be able to purchase six goats for the WE charity.
Why goats? Goats are practical animals, they like to live in harsh climates. A goat is able to provide up to 16 cups of milk a day. It's milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk and is an excellent source of calcium, protein, and other essential nutrients that growing children need. The extra milk can then be sold. Therefore a goat will enable parents to earn enough money to feed and educate their family.

Maths Champions
Congratulations to four of our Y6 pupils who won the maths cluster competition at Pyrgo this week. Ignas, Stefan, Pawel and Paris M had to solve a range of challenges in order to finish top amongst the other Harold Hill schools. We are delighted to see that all of the high quality experiences they get in class are reaping dividends!
Year 2 Poetry Prize
Year 2 entered the Premier League Primary Stars poetry competition last term. As we were one of the first 1000 schools to enter we were sent a book bag full of poetry books. The children wrote Acrostic poems using the words Try, Try Again. They explored how important it is to persevere and be resilient both within their learning and also whilst participating in a sport. Well done Year 2… a great prize and addition to the school library.
Year 1 visit to Discover Children’s Story Centre
On Tuesday Australia and New Zealand classes visited the Discover Children's Story Centre where they stepped into a magical world of forests, miniature houses, dragons and other creatures. They explored a 3D world created around the stories of the best loved children’s author, Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler. The children participated in a story building workshop where they created their own stories about a grumpy scaffolder and a scary fairy! The day ended in the story garden where the children were able to bring their stories to life. We had a fantastic time and want to thank the children for behaving so beautifully.
Attendance Update
Well done to Brazil class who had the highest attendance in Y5&6 with 96.7%. Wales & Scotland had the highest attendance in LKS2 with 97.8% and New Zealand had the highest attendance in KS1 with 96%. The overall attendance was 94.1%!
Have a fabulous weekend.
Yours sincerely,

School Council Cake Sale
The Mead School Council will be selling cakes to raise money for the WE charity campaign The Goat that Gives Back.
On Monday the school council delivered an excellent assembly to the children of Mead School highlighting the use of goats in developing countries. They discovered that because remote villages in some developing countries are very hot and dry, it is hard for the villagers to grow crops to earn money. The WE charity is campaigning to buy goats for these families.
We can buy one goat for £30. Let's see how many goats we can buy!
To raise money for this valuable cause the school council are holding some cake sales. The cakes will be 50p each and all the money will go to the charity. The school council representatives will be in the KS1 playground on Wednesday 31st January at 3pm, in the KS2 playground on Thursday 1st February at 3pm and the Reception playground on Monday 5th February at 2:50pm.

Good enough to eat
Ham sandwiches with brown bread, fruit kebabs, melon, olives and bottles of water were among some of the choices made by the children. Their creations were 'good enough to eat!'.
What would you like to put in your healthy lunch box?

Goats eat coats!
The school council have been learning about the goats as they are supporting the WE campaign 'The Goat That Gives Back'. In the new year the children will be raising awareness and fundraising to supply goats to families in developing countries. These donated goats are helping parents to earn money to enable them to feed and educate their children.
More details will follow after Christmas.

Just kidding around!
Today some representatives from the school council went to Wellgate Farm to visit some very special animals.
The two little kids and their half sister Paige will be calling Mead School home after the summer holidays. |
The children got to spend a lot of time with the baby boys, who are only three weeks old, their sister and two other goats. The children enjoyed looking after the babies for the morning and can't wait for their stables to be built at school. 'I want to call them Star and Stripe' commented Amba, 'But I think they should be called Nibble and Chew' said Jan. Their names will be decided at a later date.
Learning to muck out the stable. |
Getting the straw bedding from the barn. |
Bottle feeding, just like real babies. |
I think we have worn them out! Time for a nap. |
Look out for more information about the animals that will be arriving at the Mead farm in the future.
