Nicola Jonas is an example of strength, resilience, and self confidence. The first black woman to compete in the Olympic games in the sport of boxing, she blazed a trail for others like her to achieve their dreams.
In Year One, we learned that Nicola Jonas wanted to be a football star, but was crushed when her leg was injured. However, when she turned to boxing, she found something else she loved and something she was good at!
Year Ones made title belts, inspired by the things of which they were proud.
Through storybooks like My Hair and Hair Love, we learned a little about the contemporary history of black hair and its roots as an art form that expresses pride and nationality.
