Year 5 Art: Typography & Maps

In this pathway children were introduced to typography design and they explored how to create their own fonts and designs.
They were introduced to the work of an artist and a designer who have both used lettering combined with maps to produce maps which tell stories.
Then they created their own visual and three dimensional maps of their dream school.
  • They thought about what their text is trying to communicate. How the place name relates to the place. What kind of place might it be, and how that might affect the type of typeface they use.
  • They tried to keep it interesting by keeping their mark making varied: lines, dots, dashes.
  • Starting by marking off areas of their map, they used the shape of the area to inspire the shape of the text, i.e. fill the space with typography!
  • Next they thought about how to turn their drawings into 3d objects.
  • They chose which objects to build to help make the map more interesting (for example a bridge between islands) and how to manipulate paper to create 3D landmarks, signs and buildings.
