Super Farm Leader

We have been delighted with the leadership skills shown by Tommy over the last term. Running a farm with two ponies, two rabbits, three goats, one donkey, seven ducks and twelve chickens is quite an undertaking. In order to ensure that the animals are well cared for we need daily help from the pupils.

Tommy has been a tremendous asset to Mead Farm. He has quickly shown that he can be left to his own initiative to muck out the stables, clean the enclosures and keep the animals groomed. He handles the animals very confidently, which really puts them at ease. Most impressively has been the way he has led other pupils - who are often quite nervous - and shown them how to handle the animals.

When we began the Mead Farm project it was aimed at providing meaningful opportunities for our pupils to demonstrate leadership and have a practical way to apply their 4R skills.

Resilience
You have to be resilient with the animals. Mr Darcy - the donkey - can be quite stubborn. However you can't give up. If you talk to him, handle him confidently and tickle his ears he will eventually do want you want.

Reciprocity
When it is time to get the chickens and ducks in we have to work as a team. Someone minds the gate to the pens, while we work together to herd them inside. On your own it would take ages, but together we can get them to bed so much quicker

Thank you for all your hard work Tommy... great job!
