Ardleigh Green Bridge replacement works: changes to traffic management from
24 July 2016
As you may be aware, we are replacing the Ardleigh Green Bridge which carries the A127
Southend Arterial Road over the Great Eastern main railway line.
The bridge is at the end of its useful life and is beyond simple repair. Not replacing it now
might mean possible weight restrictions and ongoing lane closures for maintenance
becoming necessary, resulting in considerable disruption in the long-term.
I am writing to you with details of the next phase of essential work involving the demolition
and replacement of the eastern half of the bridge (the Essex-bound carriageway), which is
planned to start in late July.
From Sunday 24 July, a contraflow arrangement (a single lane in each direction) will be
introduced on the A127, meaning that the Essex-bound carriageway will close completely and
two-way traffic will operate on the other side of the road.
This arrangement will be in place on the Essex-bound carriageway of the A127 from Gallows
Corner to Squirrels Heath Road until May 2017 to allow us to complete the works.
To introduce the contraflow, the A127 will be closed overnight from Saturday 23 July from
20:00 until 08:00 the following day. The road will be closed in both directions from Gallows
Corner in the west, up to the Ardleigh Green Road/Squirrels Heath Road junction in the east. A
signed vehicle diversion will be in place during the closure.
Residents living on the Southend Arterial Road will be able to access their properties using
vehicles or on foot at all times.
In addition, access from Bryant Avenue on to the A127 will also be closed from 24 July
2016 until May 2017 while demolition and replacement of the eastern half of the bridge
(the Essex-bound carriageway) takes place. Access into Bryant Avenue from the A127
will be available during this time, aside from a few specific dates which will be publicised
nearer to the time.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
We are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum, but apologise in advance for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience while the improvements are carried out as quickly as possible.
Work will continue in the area on Mondays to Sundays between 08:00 and 18:00, except during the times indicated above, to ensure that works are completed on time.
