Y4 Roman Workshop

Our Y4 pupils had the opportunity to learn about life in Roman times. As you can see some of them had the opportunity to dress up as Romans and learn about Roman soldiers and day to day life in the Roman Empire.

Some of the things were learnt were very interesting. Rome was founded in 753BC by its first king, Romulus.

The armour was so heavy. Marching across Europe must have been really hard!

Cycling sensations!

Year 1 and 2 pupils who took part in the beginners cycling sessions last Thursday and Friday are incredibly proud of themselves for their sensational cycling skills!

Staff from Cycle Confidence played games with the children to get them balancing and looking ahead of them.

The children were heard responding in chorus-
If you look down where will you go?
"DOWN!"
If you look forward, where will you go?
"FORWARD!"

Pupils were seen adopting the 'Position of Power' and launching themselves off 'like a rocket booster!'

Out of the 20 pupils who took part, 12 can now ride confidently and a further 4 are almost there.

Due to overwhelming demand (around 100 applicants for 20 places!) Mrs Eubanks and the Travel Team are laying on an additional skills session next Friday for those who can already ride their bikes without stabilisers.
In addition we have booked another 2 day beginners'  course for December 5th and 6th . Pupils on the waiting list will be notified soon if they have been allocated a place on this course.
We will try to provide enough sessions over the year so that every child who requested a place gets their training.

READING ACHIEVEMENTS

Summer Reading Awards
A massive well done to Mead Pupils Anya Shorter, Jessica Shorter and Daniel Murphy who were presented with certificates and medals in our assemblies today by Viv our local librarian.

The children took part in the summer reading challenge at Harold Wood library. They each read 6 books and were able to retell the stories and answer questions posed by the librarian.

Anya said her favourite book was about a dinosaur and she was able to relay part of the story to a very interested KS1 audience. Hopefully this will encourage other Mead pupils to take part in a similar challenge which Viv hopes to organise for the Christmas break.

Key Stage 2 enjoying the new equipment in the sun!

Key Stage were having lots of fun on the new fitness equipment on Friday! They were lucky to have the sun shining as they were testing out all the exciting new outdoor fitness facilities!

'I'm so excited to have a new area to play at break!'
'I love swinging side to side on this - I could stay here all day!'

Remarkable readers!

Reading is important because it develops the mind. The mind is a muscle. It needs exercise. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability.

Well done to Brazil class who won the Reading award this week. They truly deserve praise as they won with 100%, which means that every pupil read 3 times or more within the week. I am so pleased that they all worked together, encouraging each other, so that they could all succeed.

Off we go with Read Write Inc

Off we go with Read Write Inc

This week the Reception children started working on the phonics programme Read Write Inc.
The programme developed by Ruth Miskin provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching Literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK`s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. Each Read Write Inc programme meets the higher expectations of the National Curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child`s progress.
The children were clearly excited to be working on the programme and listened with a high level of concentration. The individual sounds are called speed sounds  because we want the children to read them effortlessly.
This week the children started by learning the first four of their speed sounds m ,a ,d and s. With each letter sound comes a picture to help the children visualise the letter shape

m- For Maisie`s  mmmm mountain  -handwrite: Maisie ,mountain, mountain
a-  For a-a-a-a apple- handwrite : Round the apple down the leaf
d- d-d-d-dinosaur-handwrite: Round his bottom, up his tall neck, down to his feet
s-sssssnake-handwrite:slither down the snake.

With the children we practised hearing the sound that each letter made, saying the new sound and thinking of words that began with each sound. We also practised handwriting each letter concentrating on the correct starting points.
If you can give any time to helping with these speed sounds and the letter formation that would be wonderful.

For further information the You tube link below is very helpful in knowing the correct pronunciation of the speed sounds.
