Stop bullying!

Last week children in year 6 composed a rap about bullying. We held a discussion about bullying and being bullied and had a brainstorm session to list the words or phrases on the subject. Then in their own groups the children started to write their ideas down. They had to compose 8 lines to perform with an instrumental track. In year 6 art, we have been investigating different chair designs both historical and by contemporary artists like Yinka Ilori.

Before making our own miniature chairs, we have been learning through exploring how to construct different structures using a variety of objects in short 10/15 minute time allocations. We had prompts to make something which: feels shy; stands on 3 points; rocks; balances; has an extravert personality; has an introvert personality; contains the secret to everlasting happiness; is a family of things.

 

The pupils were working individually, in pairs or groups, were very creative and could discuss their creations in detail.

Green grass, leaves, trees, and bushes galore!

In year 4 art, we have been responding to the painting Surprised! By Henri Rousseau as part of the National Gallery's Take One Picture project. We discussed the painting in detail thinking about what we could see, hear, feel and smell.

We were most interested in the plants, grass and trees that fill the painting and camouflage the tiger. We noticed many stripes and repeated patterns which made us think about printmaking. We drew from photographs rainforest plants and planned how we will print them next lesson in three colour stages. The detail noticed is amazing. Well done year 4!

Tigers, tigers everywhere!

In year 3 art, we have been responding to the painting Surprised! By Henri Rousseau as part of the National Gallery's Take One Picture project. We discussed the painting in detail thinking about what we could see, hear, feel and smell.

The children were particularly interested in two aspects of the painting: how the weather is shown and the movement of the tiger.

We decided to draw tigers - it is incredibly difficult and the children shown great determination and resilience!

In year 2 art, we have been responding to the painting Surprised! By Henri Rousseau as part of the National Gallery's Take One Picture project. We discussed the painting in detail thinking about what we could see, hear, feel and smell.

The children were particularly interested in what the tiger could be looking at. This started another discussion about what other animals, birds and insects could be nearby- perhaps camouflaged. 

From photographs, we drew the other creatures using sketching pencils.

Making birds: observational sketches

In year 1 art, we have begun a sculptural learning path about birds.
Before we can make birds, we need to understand their shape so first we made observational drawings of many types of birds. We watched videos and looked at photographs.
We noticed the shape of their beaks, bodies, heads, feathers, wings, tails, legs and feet. We used pencil, pastel, crayon to make marks.

Fluttering, fluffy feathers

In year 1 art, we are on a learning pathway to make birds. 

Last lesson, we  looked in detail at the shapes, colours and patterns on different feathers. 

Then we explored making  them using charcoal, chalks, oil pastels, diluted black ink, graphite sticks, crayon, and pencil.
