Despite all of the hustle and bustle in the outdoor area some of the pupils have still managed to find a tranquil spot!

Resilience
This young man was very determined to carry on meditating even though many other pupils were splashing around in the stream behind him. That ability to ignore distractions and become absorbed in an activity is key if you want to have sustained success.

Havering Music Workshop

Our pupils had a great time with Paul - who led the workshop. The Havering Music Team worked with the children to complete a series of pieces that used percussion and tuned instruments.

We had to listen carefully to the instructions and follow the beat. Each part on its own didn't sound amazing, but together it was brilliant.

The children at both Mead and Broadford had the chance to work with the music tutors and then share their pieces with the rest of the school.

Year 6 Activity Week

Our Year 6 pupils had a fantastic time clambering to the top of the Stubbers climbing wall. The children had to draw on all of their 4Rs to complete the various challenges set of them:

First we had to work as a team to help each other in and out of the harnesses. If we weren't quick enough the other team would get to the top first. While we were each climbing we had to cheer each other on.

The children competed in a series of challenges. They also go the chance to choose their own level of difficulty based on the route they took to the top of the tower.

It was great to see the children in a different light. After working so hard on their English and Maths in the run up to SATs this was a wonderful chance to work on some of their teamwork and resilience skills - getting to the top is hard!

Y1 Pirate Day

Pirate Invasion At Mead Primary

To celebrate the end of their topic Year 1 pupils at Mead Primary had a Pirate Day. Hordes of young pirates swarmed across the playground in the morning, ready for a day of treasure hunting, parrot training and general skullduggery. First the trainee pirates had a performance from the Hobgoblin Theatre Company who retold them the story of Treasure Island. Inspired by that tale of gold and fortune the Pirates were released from the hall to start their very own treasure hunt.

Sprinkled through the gold coins led the Year 1 pupils to the desert island where the chest had been buried. Using their maps the children then had to work out the best place to dig. Inside the buried caskets were instructions and materials to make their very own pirate ships. Anyone who didn't follow the instructions risked being asked to walk the plank!

The immersive nature of the day, and the great theatre production from the Hobgoblin Company meant that the children produced some fantastic work. By making their learning come to life in this way we are able to get far more from their writing and conversation... it was really successful!

Digital Leader Online Safety Workshop

In May our Digital Leaders from Mead & Broadford came together to create an Online Safety Matters presentation for use in our schools. This initiative is aimed at empowering our pupils to use the internet positively while staying safe. We will also be presenting this to parents to help equip them with the tools to keep children protected online.

So far, we have reached out to over 400 pupils! We have also trained over 40 digital leaders to redeliver the workshops to even more children and parents in the future.

The Workshops
In the workshops, parents and children can explore together:

• How they connect with others online
• Likes and dislikes about the internet
• How to get the most out of the internet and use it positively
• Ways in which people can misuse the information shared online
• How online and internet access matter for the promotion and protection of children’s rights.

It was a bit nerve wracking having to stand up in front of all the other pupils, but my team helped to to complete the presentation.

Junior Music Festival Rehearsal

We were delighted to welcome pupils from over 7 different schools to rehearse at Mead this week. The children are getting ready for their big night at the Queen's Theatre, where they will be performing a selection of songs related to The Wind In The Willows.

Race Night Raffle Winner!

Parents, friends and families of Mead & Broadford Primary school came together to raise over £4,000 at the Learning Federation Parents' Association Race Night on Friday evening.

The Race Night was the first joint fundraising venture by the two schools and was a spectacular success, with over £3,000 being secured from ticket sales and corporate sponsorship before the evening started. On the night, parents contributed an additional £1,000 to the final total.

We have been delighted at the way the two parent communities have come together to support this event. To raise such a significant sum is an incredible achievement and testament to the commitment shown by our team of volunteers. These funds are vital to us continuing to offer the high quality of education which our pupils deserve. We are now looking forward to the Summer fete which promises to be even more successful.
