Computing in year 5

Year 5 will be looking at being cryptographers in their computing sessions this term. In their first lesson they discovered that a semaphore is a simple code for converting letters and numbers into different positions of two flags which are held in each hand. They then used this code to communicate secret messages to their partners.

Year 1 Music

Playing the recorder is fun

Currently, children in Year 1 are learning their first recorder tune called ''Take it easy''. They are working on the B note which is introduced with a song about child-friendly characters. The words of the song help children to get rhythm and there is a simple guide to reading music. Listen to Palau class performance.

Come rain or shine

The children in Barbados and St Lucia class enjoyed another forest school session today. The wind and rainy spells did not deter us from having fun! Today we got to make our own leaf bats and learnt how to tie the string around a stick. Sophie R held on tight to hers as she said "it's blowy".  We made conker runs and built with sticks, made potions within the mud kitchen adding in some lovely scents of rosemary and mixing it all with coloured water. We heard a lovely story by Julia Donaldson "Room on a broom" and even had the help of some story props to bring the book alive. To finish our session we then enjoyed a lovely cup of hot chocolate to help keep us warm.

Year 4 art: The Owl and The Pussycat by Edward Lear

Last half term, Year 4 used charcoal to for different effects. The created such scenes as fierce thunderstorms, huge storms at sea, whipping winds, and calm tranquility. They also drew a scene using toys. Here is some of their creations:

They then illustrated the classic poem The Owl and The Pussycat by Edward Lear in a concertina book.

Island adventures!

In year 5 art the children have been exploring typography and maps. Over several weeks they designed and made their own individual maps for a fictional island (including creating their own fonts). 

They chose several of the landmarks from their map to make 3D; thinking carefully about shape nets, the properties of different papers and cards, and the size, in order to achieve their desired effect.
