Reception Reading Morning

A BIG thank you to all those parents who were able to make our Stay and Read session today. It was a great success and lovely to see so many parents sharing in a love of reading with their child. Thank you to those who took the time to complete our evaluation form, your feedback is much appreciated.
Our next reading morning will be Thursday 9th November 8.30-8.50am, please look out for further reminders.

Special Census Day menu

Thursday 5th October is Census Day.

We have put on a special menu as school funding is based on the uptake of school dinners on the day-the more pupils having school dinner the more money we receive!

We would therefore encourage as many pupils as possible to elect to have school dinner on Thursday please. See menu below

Year 3 become Ecologists

Year 3 have been enjoying their new science topic on the environment & evolution.

They have been investigating natural selection & survival of the fittest in our very own school forest.

Last week, the children loved working in two teams, one team hiding some 'peppered moths' in the forest and the other team finding them.

 

'We found more light moths as the dark ones camouflaged better within the trees' said Charlotte.

This week we were looking at Charles Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest.

Acting as a giraffe, Aniyah was able to catch the most wiggly worms from a tall tree as she was best suited to the environment.

I still managed to catch lots of wiggly worms even though i was the smallest. I was able to pull the branches down with my hands to get the worms. Said Taylor.

 

The children are enjoying their outdoor learning and are already excited for their next lesson next week!

Great start to Forest Schools for Year 3

Blog Week 1:

What an amazing group of enthusiastic learners we had in the woods today. The children engaged well with adults and peers and made the most of exploring their environment. They got stuck in straight away climbing, building and creating. There was no need for resources to support the children today. They instantly thrived and groups formed following a range of interests. I'm looking forward to the adventures of the next few weeks!

 Blog Week 2:

Silence! Not often a part of life with children but today we stood silently in the woods and listened!

"I heard a fox walking on the sticks," said Ricky.

"The birds were singing," said Lexie.

Taking a pause to listen inspired the children to go bird watching with sound books to identify the birds they heard. Some made bird feeders while others used a hand drill to make creations with conkers.

Road Safety Show

All of Year 3 and some year 4 pupils were fortunate to watch and take part in a road safety magic show this morning. The children thoroughly enjoyed the interactive show and learned about different aspects of road safety- how to keep safe crossing roads (Did you know there are 5 different types of crossings?) and how to dress to be seen on darker evenings. They were really shocked when Mr Hughes shares the statistics about the number of accidents involving children in London.

Reception reminders

On Tuesday 3rd October Reception are holding their first Stay and read session. Parents are invited to come and join their child in their classroom to read or listen to a story with them.

At 9am we will be holding a Read, Write, Inc phonic workshop providing information on how we teach your child to read and write at school and providing practical advice for you to support them at home.

Reception Newsletter Autumn 1 01.10.17

Dear Parents/Carers,
What a fantastic first full week the children have had in school. We were greeted with many smiley faces each morning, with children keen to see their new friends and explore the learning opportunities within their classrooms. The children have shown great independence and resilience in our early morning routines and we actively encourage parents to continue to promote this. 
We are on Week 3 of the Havering School Menu please remember to go through the choices with your child:

    Monday  

      Lamb Mint Grills with yoghurt and cucumber dip with oven baked potato wedges
      Homemade pea and bacon pasta
      Vegetarian sausage roll with oven baked potato wedges

Our school day begins from 8.30-8.45am with a 3.00pm collection time. In the mornings the children need to walk through the main gate and enter through the Reception area doors. We are kindly reminding parents with buggies to please leave them at the Reception area doors and not bring them into the corridors. At 3.00pm Gate 3 is also open for parents and the children will be released through the Reception area doors. Please do not crowd the doors at the end of the day and as soon as Teachers have seen you they will hand your child over to you.

Each week we will provide you with a newsletter.  The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you up to date with any relevant news in Reception.  It will include a list of intended learning objectives, an overview of activities, the learning challenge (which we will not commence until the second part of the Autumn term), notices, important dates and the stories and topics that we will be focussing on.
We hope you had a chance to look at our starting school blogs which appeared on the Mead blog page and on Facebook. Please remember to check these regularly for updates.

Our story this week will be ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ by Michael Rosen. We will be providing the children opportunities to bring this story to life by going on a bear hunt ourselves, making our own bears using fruit and bread and also providing other opportunities for them to demonstrate their creativity.
In maths this week we will be introducing the children to ‘Ten town’, which is a programme used to introduce numbers and help your child to accurately form them with an accompanying rhyme.

We will be beginning our Read, Write, Inc lessons and your child will be learning the following sounds m,a,s,d. To help consolidate their learning of these sounds on Friday we will be sending home some letter formation sheets for them to practise with.

The learning objectives will be listed under these headings:

To sometimes give meanings to the marks they draw and paint

This newsletter will be posted on our EYFS blog and Facebook page at the beginning of each week.   

Messages.
With the weather changing it would be really useful if the children had a pair of wellington boots in school and also a spare pair of clothes.    
Please also remember to check the Parent Notice Boards outside your child’s class as these are updated regularly.

Rewards Strategies
Just so you are aware we follow a whole school approach to behaviour management, incorporating the 4 R’s which can be found on the school website along with the values.  To ensure the system is age appropriate we use a happy and sad face within the Early Years.  To ensure a close partnership we will work with you if your child keeps finding their name on the red face.
