Sustainable cities- Year 6

Last week, Year 6 had the opportunity to learn about sustainable cities. They spent 3 lessons looking at different aspects; making and designing an earthquake proof building; designing their sustainable city; designing a landmark for their city.

Lesson 1: To make an earthquake proof building                                                                                                       I was really impressed to see how they worked collaboratively in groups to create a building from different materials. We then tested them to see if it was earthquake proof. Surprisingly, all buildings stayed intact (although some wobbled and toppled over.) From previous DT lessons, they had remembered that in order to make a stable structure they needed triangular joints.

Lesson 3: To design a landmark for their sustainable city                                                                                    Their landmark designs for their city were really inspirational. They thought carefully about what the landmark symbolised and created an image to reflect this. Here are some of their efforts.
