Year 1 Drawing

In year 1 art, we started the year drawing the characters from the story Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. The children listened to the story and drew the characters from the descriptions given. They used their imagination and created beautiful dogs!

We were focusing in our first few lessons how to use pencils in different ways; to create textures.

Then we explored using pastels and chalks in different ways to draw spirals, and snails. We noticed how we use our fingers, hands, wrists, arms and shoulders when drawing!

We also drew careful observational drawings of shells which were very difficult because of the intricate detail. We explored the patterns and lines on the shells before drawing them using sketching pencils.

Beautiful Birds

In art, year one finished making their beautiful 3D birds.
They carefully made delicate wings, beaks, tails, and bodies using pencil, chalk, oil pastel, watercolour and ink.
Out of different types of paper, they cut shapes, folded, scrunched and shaped the different parts.
Lastly, little feet made from paper clips were attached so that they could stand.
It took several weeks and the final creations were delightful.
Here are some of them:

Making birds: observational sketches

In year 1 art, we have begun a sculptural learning path about birds.
Before we can make birds, we need to understand their shape so first we made observational drawings of many types of birds. We watched videos and looked at photographs.
We noticed the shape of their beaks, bodies, heads, feathers, wings, tails, legs and feet. We used pencil, pastel, crayon to make marks.
Here are some of our drawings:

Fluttering, fluffy feathers

In year 1 art, we are on a learning pathway to make birds.

Last lesson, we  looked in detail at the shapes, colours and patterns on different feathers.

Then we explored making  them using charcoal, chalks, oil pastels, diluted black ink, graphite sticks, crayon, and pencil.

Watercolour extravaganza!

In year 1 art this half term we have been exploring how to use watercolour paints.
We looked at the watercolour artist Emma Burleigh and her ideas of how to use watercolour in interesting ways.
We learned how to apply the paint to paper- it needs plenty of water! We explored what happens when wet paint in one colour is applied next to or on top of another colour. We even used the end of the brush to drag the paint across the page.

Here are some of our pieces:
The following week we looked at what we could see in our paintings using our imagination. We used pencil, pen and oil pastel to add detail. There are dragons, babies, insects, patterns, snakes!
The more you look into the detail of the paintings, the more you can find.
What can you see in our finished work?

Rolling, twisting, pinching, pulling, squashing: modelling materials

In year 1 art, we have been using plasticine to make models. We have rolled, pinched, twisted, pulled, and joined pieces together. This has also been helping develop our fine motor skills.

In the first lesson, we made different sized spheres and then we rolled into really long cylindrical shapes. We also made caterpillars and snails.

In our second lesson we made octopuses using all our skills. Here our some of them:

Hands, Feet & Flowers

In year 1 art, we have made a layered piece. First we printed on old cardboard boxes using our hands and bright coloured paints. Then, we drew outlines of flowers in black pen using photographs for inspiration. Finally, we smudged chalk into the backgrounds. Fun and beautiful!

Hairy Maclary by Year 1

In art, year 1 explored different ways to use sketching pencils for different effects.

Then we read the story of Hairy Maclary and the children had to draw each of the dogs listening to the description from the book. They had to think about the size and shape of each dog and the texture of their fur using their pencil in different ways.

How many different ways can you see that the children have used their pencils?

Art

Spirals

In Year 1 we were learning all about spirals this week in art.

We looked at lots of spirals in nature such as snails, plants and worms.

This  inspired us to draw our own huge spirals using charcoal.

At the start, in the centre of the page, we just used our hand but as it got bigger and bigger we used our arm and shoulder to draw the enormous spirals.

We got very, very messy but had lots of fun!
