Year 2 Black History Month

Year 2 had a brilliant time learning about and celebrating Black History Month.

We had a very special visitor join us to share her experiences of the Notting Hill Carnival, how it started and why it is such a huge celebration. We enjoyed dancing as if we were at the carnival and loved the whole celebration.

We enjoyed trying on the headdresses and then going back to class to make our own. We learnt about Claudia Jones and how the Notting Hill Carnival came to be.

Year 6 Celebrate Black History Month

The theme for Black History Month this year was "Saluting Our Sisters". Year 6 decided to celebrate British, black female athletes that have broken records, excelled in their field and become an inspiration to many. Earlier in the week, year 6 took part in a circuit session where they got the opportunity to train like Nicola Adams (boxing), Tessa Sanderson (javelin) and Dame Kelly Holmes (long distance running). The children's effort was superb! Later, the children then researched a trailblazing female of their choice and created a newspaper article identifying why they are so influential.

Year 3 - Black History Month Author Event

Today Year 3 had a fabulous opportunity to be part of a 'Black History Month Author Event' via Zoom.

Year 3 joined Vanessa Taylor - Number 1 best selling author and 'Peoples Book Prize 2021' winner on a Zoom session. They listened to parts of the story, joined in with discussion and asked Vanessa lots of questions about her book and life.

Vanessa's book 'Baller Boys' was released in May 2020 . Baller Boys is a great children’s read. It is not just about football; it is about children and their possibilities. Centered around the players in a grass roots football team, it follows the journey of two friends from trial day to selection, where only one of them makes the main team and the others do not and what happens when feelings of jealousy and belonging surface.

Baller Boys has been the no1 best-selling children’s book in the sports fiction category and has received many 5-star reviews about its authentic story lines, diverse characters and how it deals with many of the issues today our children face such as ADHD, wearing glasses, living with asthma.

Well done Year 3!

The children in year 3 celebrated Black History Month by learning about various trailblazer men and women throughout black history. They used the chrome books to research facts on Marcus Rashford, Halle Berry, Michelle Obama, Mary Seacole, Lewis Hamilton and many more. The children then presented their findings to the rest of their group.
