Year 2 University of Mead Forest Explorers

University of Mead: Forest Explorers in Year 2 🌳

Today, we tried to welcome some magic back to our forest. The children learnt about the Mead Gnome who used to live underneath the sycamore tree but he disappeared when the children started playing on iPads and computers, instead of in the great outdoors. The children made it their mission to show the gnome that they did want to play by encouraging mythical, magical creatures back into our forest. They made fairy houses, tree spirits and even a gnome paddling pool! Of course, there was also time for some forest bathing in our cosy hammock!

Within this, we learnt that the soil in Harold Hill is a clay-based soil and children loved digging deep into the mud pit to find some of this malleable clay. We also learnt how to identify a sycamore and oak tree based on the leaf shape.

“Forest School is my favourite lesson ever”, said Chelsea (Madagascar)

University of Mead Dance

 University of Mead Dance

In the Dance course this week Years 5 and 6 have been learning to jive! The children are building on their techniques, rhythm and musicality and learning to dance in hold!

Well done everyone!

Year 2 University of Mead

Today was our first practical cooking lesson. We made yogurt bark with raspberries and white chocolate. We were chopping and mixing! We then washed up our equipment and cleaned down our work stations. We will get to try our yogurt bark on Monday when it has had time to set in the fridge. I think we have some real chefs in year 2 :)

Horrid History

The first week of University of Mead got off to a horrible start for the children taking the 'Horrid History' course.  They learnt all about Queen Elizabeth I and discovered that she used thick white make up containing vinegar and lead to cover her small-pox scars and she brushed her teeth with sugar.  No wonder they were so rotten and disgusting!  The children then made their own masks to scare their parents with!

Green-fingered Gardening

This half term, the pupils have the opportunity to make choices about their own learning and enjoy studying something new through the University of Mead programme. In the first lesson of  the ‘Green-fingered Gardening’ course, the pupils had to make their own planters using toilet rolls which are decompostable. They each made 3 and then planted sweetpea, sunflower and basil seeds. They watered them and then throughout this week, they need to care for them.
