Year 5 ICT

For ICT last term, Year 5 had to create their own game using Scratch. We had to input codes and test if the game worked. If there was any problem with the code we had to debug it and get the game working. We created a game where the shark had to catch the fish but avoid the crab.

SAFETY NET: How to keep your child safe online

It has been brought to my notice that some of our children are accessing inappropriate material online at home which they are then discussing in school causing extreme anxiety to others.
This includes:

  • The 'Momo Challenge' which is available through you tube and features a grotesque cartoon character who tries to goad children to extreme violence.
  • Tik Tok-which is an App rated 12+ but which has very inappropriate content not suitable for younger children

With this in mind I thought it would be useful to share the following advice with you.

The Internet can be an amazing tool to help children learn and play.

But with the digital world changing all the time, how can you make sure your child is safe?

Set up parental controls

· Parental controls can be used to block upsetting or harmful content, control in-app purchases or manage how long your child spends online

· The filters can help control what time of day your child can go online, and to stop them from downloading apps they are too young for

Talk to your children

· Have regular conversations about what your child is doing online

· Explore sites and apps together

· Talk about what personal information they should share online

· Create a family agreement about what behaviour is appropriate when they are online

Do your research

· Check through websites your child will use through the Net Aware

· Change privacy settings and turning off location sharing

If you need help now, you can phone experts on the free NSPCC & O2 helpline 0808 800 5002

Digital Leader Online Safety Workshop

In May our Digital Leaders from Mead & Broadford came together to create an Online Safety Matters presentation for use in our schools. This initiative is aimed at empowering our pupils to use the internet positively while staying safe. We will also be presenting this to parents to help equip them with the tools to keep children protected online.

So far, we have reached out to over 400 pupils! We have also trained over 40 digital leaders to redeliver the workshops to even more children and parents in the future.

The Workshops
In the workshops, parents and children can explore together:
  • How they connect with others online
  • Likes and dislikes about the internet
  • How to get the most out of the internet and use it positively
  • Ways in which people can misuse the information shared online
  • How online and internet access matter for the promotion and protection of children’s rights.
It was a bit nerve wracking having to stand up in front of all the other pupils, but my team helped to to complete the presentation.
Amelia - Year 5

Working with the Mead pupils was great fun. We were able to collaborate effectively on Google Drive and share our ideas.
Jack Eve - Year 5

Mead has new digital leaders.

Children in Y5 & Y6 were invited to apply for the post of digital leader. After receiving a vast number of applications Mr. Frith held interviews on Wednesday afternoon for the shortlisted candidates. All the children conducted themselves well in the interviews and after a lot of deliberation the leaders were chosen.

Our new digital leaders are George Folan, Pawel Lyczko, Angel Adjei, Amelia Christie, Aaron Livingstone, Amelia Tattam and Stefan Labedzki in Y5. Abbie Harding, Callum Jackson, Rosie Bonnett and Formoso Da Silva in Y6.

There are many projects in the pipeline for the leaders to get their teeth into in the year ahead. These include leading Internet safety training with parents and taking assemblies, as well as having the opportunities to help teach other children within the school to improve their computing skills.

Well done to all the children who took the time to apply for the role.

Online Safety

Pupils at Mead Primary have been learning about social media and how to stay safe online. Normally we tell our children to share but online it's different. In fact, sometimes sharing online can be dangerous.

Together our Digital Leaders and School Council members made up a campaign to inform pupils of ways in which they can stay safe with the different social media apps.

For parents, we advise that talking to your child is the best way to help keep them safe. But with things changing all the time, it can be hard to keep up to date. If parents need more advice on how to stay safe they can use the NSPCC helpline: 0808 8005002.
Abby - Year 5

The straightforward, no-nonsense advice was communicated to the pupils via posters, and show simple ways in which you can stay safe online.

The internet is a great place for children to be. Being Share Aware makes it safer.
