Weekly Newsletter- 20th December 2019

Dear Parents,

What a lovely week we’ve had in school. Our choir sang beautifully at the St Paul’s Christmas concert and despite the rain our carol service in the playground was well attended and the children did us proud. At times like this I am bursting with pride as I’m sure you are.

We have come to the end of a long term and I am sure that the whole school community is looking forward to a well earned rest. The staff certainly are after what we’ve had to put up with from those mischevious elves! Hopefully you’ve been able to follow the elves antics on facebook with your children-We have certainly had some fun this week!

It was lovely to see everyone supporting the children at their Christmas concerts. They certainly did us all proud. I am pleased to report that we raised the grand total of £1210 which we sincerely hope will help one of our local families through a very difficult time. On behalf of them thank you so much for your generosity.

On behalf of myself and all the staff thank you so much for your cards and generous gifts-I think some of us will be putting on a lot of weight over Christmas!

Year Four Visit St Paul's Church

Year Four have had the privilege of visiting the local church as part of their current RE unit, investigating the Nativity story in the Christian faith.

Russel was kind enough to let our children ask any questions they might have about the story, and the symbols in Christianity.

We even got to sing some carols, and smell some real Frankincense!

Thank you Russel and St Paul's for including us in your community.

St Paul's Church in Harold Hill

On Tuesday the 10th of December, children in year four will have the opportunity to visit our local church, St Paul's. The aim of the visit is for the children to be able to ask questions of the vicar about the Nativity Story, why it is important to those in the Christian faith, and what the different symbols in the story represent.

The visit is designed to support the children's learning in their Religious Education unit, however if you do not wish your child to attend, please send a letter to your class teacher.

Germany President's Report

This week in Germany class we have done lots of exciting things.

Some lucky members of Germany have loved participating in their new maths groups, where they play maths games to help them with their addition and place value.

For anti-bullying week, we learned that we need to be a strong community to protect those who might be bullied. We learned that we need to tell a teacher if we think we are being bullied, and remain positive. We made different coloured sock puppets that represent who we are, and acted out plays about bullying.

On Friday, we saw a happy, exciting play called Beauty and the Beast. The best part was when the beast turned back into a human.

Now that Christmas is coming, our classroom is starting to look very Christmass-y with lots of fairy lights to make it cosy. We practiced our Christmas songs to be ready for our Christmas concert!

We will look forward to another exciting week!

From Chajay and Olivia.
President and Vice-President of Germany.

Germany Celebrates Black History Month

Kellis, Anmona, Amiyah and Asia visiting Germany to present on British Jamaican Culture

Now that October is well and truly over, Germany is reflecting back on the projects, profiles and stories we have learned during Black History Month.

Black History Month is important to all those in Germany, and the children were excited to research and showcase inspiring Black British men and women.

'I am glad we did Black History Month, because it shows that Britain did not always give black people the same rights as white people, and that there were lots of important Black British people we did not know about." said Brea.

Germany would like to give a special thank you to Kellis, Anmona, Asia and Amiyah from USA, who gave us a special presentation on British Jamaican culture.

This week is anti-bullying week and the theme is 'Change starts with us’
This year the goal is to inform schools and settings, children and young people, parents and carers to know that it takes a collective responsibility to stop bullying. Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well into adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Because together, we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with working together.

Pupils are invited to show solidarity with other schools across the country on 12th November by wearing odd socks to school and we will be planning activities across all year groups on this day.

We now know that there will be a General election on December 12th. I have been notified that the school will be used as a polling station and therefore, for safeguarding reasons we’ve decided to close. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause working parents but trust there is sufficient time for you to make child care arrangements. Please be aware that Christmas concerts scheduled for this day have now been moved to Monday December 16th.

Congratulations to Karen howell who has been elected as the new Parent Governor representing Mead on the Learning Federation Governing Board. Weekly Newsletter-1st November 2019

Dear Parents,
I hope you have all had a good week’s break, spending time with family and friends, and that everyone is ready for what promises to be a very busy time as we approach the Christmas period.

On behalf of school and The Harold Hill food bank I would like to thank you all for your generous donations for our Harvest Festival, held earlier this week. It is gratifying to know that we are helping members of our local community.

It was really pleasing to see in the surveys, completed at the recent parent meetings, that the overwhelming majority of you indicated that you 'strongly agree' we deal well with bullying.

Week beginning 11th November is anti-bullying week and the theme is 'Change starts with us’

This year the goal is to inform schools and settings, children and young people, parents and carers to know that it takes a collective responsibility to stop bullying. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause working parents but trust there is sufficient time for you to make child care arrangements. Please be aware that Christmas concerts scheduled for this day have now been moved to Monday December 16th.

Sadly, Mrs Colak has had to resign from her role as Parent Governor due to work commitments. I would like to thank her for the time and support she has given us and wish her well in her new venture. We have had 2 nominations for Parent Governor and so are holding an election. You are able to vote for your chosen candidate by following the link on the blog/facebook. Alternatively you can come into school to cast your vote. The election closes next Friday 8th November at 12:00.

We are holding our Harvest Festival celebration on Tuesday 29th October.

This year once again we are going to give your donations to the Harold Hill Foodbank who do such a wonderful job helping local residents in times of need.

We would therefore be grateful if children could start bringing in donations this week. The Foodbank have specifically asked for non-perishable items as they cannot pre determine when the food will be distributed and due to the half term holiday we have to store items for a few weeks.

Any donations will be much appreciated.

INSPIRATIONAL TALK

Our year 5 and year 6 pupils thoroughly enjoyed the very inspirational talks given by our visitors Ed and Peter yesterday.

Ed, who is 83 years old, came from a very humble beginning to build up his own multi million pound company which allowed him to pursue his love of aeroplanes. He was able to renovate and fly a spit fire as well as lots of other light aircraft, and took part in lots of aerobatic displays and competitions.
He was very proud when he told us that he has lunched with Prince Phillip and met Princess Diana.

Peter has just retired from his job as an airline pilot. While still at school he worked on Romford Market to save enough money to have flying lessons and when he told one of his teachers his dream was to become a pilot she suggested it was impossible. However he worked hard, was able to achieve his dream and returned to the school some time later to advise his teacher he had fulfilled his dream!
The children sat absolutely enthralled throughout the session and asked some very interesting questions.

The moral was very much-anything is achievable with the right mindset and lots of hard work- I wonder if any of our children have such wonderful aspirations?

At the end we were presented with a model 737 plane and a signed photo of Ed's spitfire which will be displayed in school for all to see and I have had a lovely e-mail from Ed and Peter praising the children for their exemplary behaviour and their very sensible questions.Well done everyone.

A massive thank you!

Dear parents, carers and children,

Laos day, last Friday 5th April, was a huge success! Thank you so much to everyone who wore colours of the Laos flag - red, white and/ or blue - and donated. It was so lovely to see the school supporting such a fantastic cause and has made me even more excited to volunteer there during the summer.

I am now pleased to confirm that I raised a massive £812.95, which I am completely overwhelmed by.

Thank you once again for your generosity, I know it will help towards improving the education in Laos.

Miss Pountney.

Dear Parents/carers,
Our year 5 teacher, Miss Pountney, has volunteered to support colleagues in Laos during the summer holidays. However, she has to fund her travel and pay towards the cost of the programme. We have decided to support her in this wonderful venture, to show our commitment to help improving education Globally.
So on Friday 5th April we are holding Laos day-children are invited to come into school dressed in the colours of the Laos flag, as shown above, for a donation of £1.
Miss Pountney will be leading an assembly to share information about her trip with the children.
Thank you as ever for your support
