Reception Newsletter Summer 2 Week 4

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you are having a lovely weekend and enjoying this super weather. Hopefully this weather will now last. Please remember to apply sun cream to your child before school and if you want to send their named tube in the children will have the opportunity to reapply their cream before lunchtime.Please also send your child in with a sun hat and a bottle of water and we will talk to the children about drinking plenty of water to keep hydrated.

This week our focus story will be ‘The snail and the whale’ by Julia Donaldson. It is a story about a tiny snail who longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of a whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the vastness of the world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, it's the tiny snail who saves the day. This will be a great opportunity for your child to share about their knowledge of different places in the world.

The tiny caterpillars have now entered chrysalis state.Will this be the week that the beautiful butterflies emerge?



Thank you again for your continued support and cooperation in encouraging your child to come in of a morning independently, it is much appreciated and will help in their transition into Year 1. The majority of children are now managing this very well and enjoying the satisfaction of being able to do this.

A little reminder Wednesday is our PE day, please ensure your child has their named PE kit in school. We have a lot of lost property accumulating in school which cannot be returned to their rightful owner as they are unnamed.


If your child has needed a change of clothes, could you please ensure these are sent back into school as we now have no spare clothes in school!

This week is Week 2 of the Havering catering services. Monday's choices are:

Messages –
  • There is still time if you haven’t already done so to return your child’s Technology questionnaire.
  • If you received a GDPR form to complete, please could you ensure this is returned ASAP.  
  • PLEASE NAME all items of clothing. This will help when returning lost items, particularly jumpers and cardigans with the right child. We are still accumulating a large number of items. Please check your child’s class if they are missing something.

  • Our PE days are Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a named PE kit in school. If they wear earrings they need to be removed on this day.

  • Thank you to all those parents who have sent in a named set of spare clothes. If you haven’t yet could you please ensure your child has a named set of spare clothes and underwear on their peg as soon as possible. Please note this does not need to be school uniform.

  • Children can also bring in a pair of named wellies to leave in school. This would be great for use in the mud kitchen and on rainy days.

  • Please actively encourage your child to put away their book bag and hang up their coat in the morning. It would also be really helpful if you could discuss the menu choices with your child the previous night to help them independently find their cupcake and make their lunch choice.

  • Please can you ensure that if your child is not in school for any reason you call the school to report the absence. This saves the office staff a lot of time spent in making phone calls.

Please remember the homework expectation in Reception is to read every day and learn the red words. If you would like further homework please complete the Learning Challenge.

Learning Challenge

Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, famous person, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.

Expressive Art and Design:
