Black History Month - Year 5

To celebrate Black History Month, Year 5 have started to read, 'The Elemental Detectives' by Patrice Lawrence. They have drawn Marisee's grandmother, Mary, using detailed decriptions found in the text.

Year 4 - Black History Month

 To celebrate Black History Month, year 4 have started to read 'The Lizzie and Bell Mysteries' by J.T.Williams. The children have written book reviews and created their own book covers for the story. 

Black History Month- Sulwe

To celebrate Black History month, Mead has chosen to celebrate black authors. Year 4 read a story called Sulwe by the award winning author Lupita Nyong'o.  It follows the story of a little girl who wishes for her dark skin to be lighter. Throughout the story, she learns that true beauty comes from within. After listening to the story, the pupils in Italy class had to write a book review and design a new front cover for the story.

Sophia drew her favourite part of the story and explained why. "I liked how close Day and Night were as sisters- the brightest of the day and the darkest of night. Very different but they both needed each other. I particularly loved the illustrations. "

Black History Month Celebrations in Year 6

In year 6, for Black History Month, we chose to read the story “Weirdo”. This brilliant story about the power of being different is written by the British award winning author Zadie Smith. Take a look at some of the book reviews the children completed.

 Today, we joined the Black History Month live assembly. It was really fun and interesting!

Black History Month in Year 3

 As part of Black History Month Year 3 have been learning about some inspirational black British women.  They wrote fact files about the author Malorie Blackman, space scientist Maggie Alderin-Pocock, nurse Mary Seacole and Paralympian sprinter and cyclist Kadeena Cox.  Nubian even completed some wonderful work at home.

Althea McNish

The theme for Black History Month this year was "Saluting Our Sisters". In Year 4, the children looked at the work of Althea McNish who was amongst the first, if not the first, designer of African-Caribbean descent to achieve international recognition. Her designs injected much-needed colour and life into the post-war fashion and textiles industry from the 1950s onwards.

Her dazzling contrasting colours, full of movement and expressive lines featured natural imagery drawn from the tropical flora and fauna from her native Trinidad. Her designs also took the form of lively abstract patterns, bursting with energy and visual complexity. The children were inspired by her work and created their own designs. 

Year 4 Black History Month

The theme for Black History Month this year was "Saluting Our Sisters". In Year 4, the children researched an influential Black British woman of their choice from different industries including sports, politics, music, science and medicine, broadcasting and entertainment, literature and arts. They chose very interesting people such as the author Malorie Blackman, Mathematician Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon, Mary seacole, a war-time nurse, the tennis player Heather Watson or the singer Emili Sande.

Lucille chose to research Mary Seacole because shhe helped the soldiers in the war.

Nuhaa wanted to research the author Malorie Blackman. She found out the despite being rejected 82 times, she finally became a published author.

Izyan chose to find out all about the Scientist Maggie Aderin Pocock. She is inspirational in the field of space and Izyan is fascinated by this.

Year 4 Black History Month

They chose very interesting people such as the author Malorie Blackman, Mathematician Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon, Mary seacole, a war-time nurse, the tennis player Heather Watson or the singer Emili Sande.

Arsalaan chose Dr Maggie Andorin Pococok who is an expert in the field of Science. Arsalaan is interested in Scienctific discoveries and wanted to find out what her accomplishments are.

Lorienne chose to research Lauren James, a footballer who played for England. 

Charley chose to research the boxer Nicola Adams. She wanted to find out how she became a famous boxer.
