Y5 Parents - Tranferring to Secondary School Talks

Given the governments restrictions on social distancing, unfortunately the Admissions Team will not be able to deliver the usual ‘Transferring to Secondary School Talks’ to parents of year 5 pupils. To support you through the process, a video presentation has been produced for parents to watch at home.

The information can be found in the links below or on the Havering website.
Please spend some time watching the presentation and familiarise yourself with the brochure.

Both links below will provide information around the application process in readiness for 1st September when the application system opens.

Update on wider opening of school

Dear Parents/Carers,

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement in May regarding the wider opening of schools, Mead is now welcoming back children from Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. The school continues to cater for children of Key Workers and children deemed vulnerable.

To make sure that the children and staff are able to social distance when appropriate, returning children are in allocated bubbles of no more than 10 children. To enable this, each year group has allotted days and times. I would like to thank all parents and carers for supporting the school while we were setting up the systems to allow for wider opening and in following all of the guidelines when bringing children back into school. You have helped to make it a very smooth process for everyone.

To make sure we can continue to plan effectively, the school will not be taking any further children after 6th July, your last chance to request a place will be 1st July 2020.

Please note that the last day of term is Friday 17th July 2020.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister announced that in September all children will return to school. The school is currently waiting for guidance from the Department for Education to find out how this is planned to happen and whether we will still have to plan for social distancing etc. I will let you know as soon as I have further details.

Thank you again for your support,

Mrs L Smith

Letter to Y5 Parents/Carers from Hornchurch High School

Dear Parents/Carers,

It is coming up to that time of year when you will be starting to think about secondary school choices.

Here at Hornchurch High School, we usually invite our Junior School partners up for activity days, competition days, tours and taster lessons. Unfortunately, as you are aware, these are on hold for now but we will resume these when we are able to.

In the meantime, if you would like to come to the school and meet with a member of the senior team, we are holding socially distanced tours with opportunities to visit our new building and world class sports facilities. These are available to you between 10am and 1pm, Monday to Thursday each week between now and Friday 17th July.

If you are interested in coming in for a tour, please email publicity@hornchurchhigh.com to book an appointment.

We hope to see you soon.
Kind regards,
Mr James Lynn

Possible reopening of school to Year 5 pupils before end of summer term

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you know some of the year groups have started to return to school on a part time basis. We have followed the government guidelines and have reopened to pupils in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year. Of course we also continue to provide provision for all our vulnerable children and those of key workers as required by parents.

Having ensured the school is safe for these children we are looking at the feasibility of bringing our Year 5 children back for the last few weeks of term. You know your personal situation and your child best and as a parent/carer it is your choice whether to send your child back to school at this particular time. Please be assured that you will not be fined if you consider that the safest place for your child is to remain at home.

We need your help and your opinion!

I want to reassure you that we are not going to be pressuring anyone to send their children to school. In order to assist us in planning for reopening it is essential for us to know if your child will attend. Once the school has an indication of numbers we can put together a plan of what having our Year 5 will look like. You can tell us your opinion now by completing this form.

As with our other year groups:
  • We will limit class sizes - pupils will be in groups of no more than 15 therefore they may not be in their normal friendship groups. Pupils will remain in the group that they are placed in for the duration of their time in school and will not mix with other groups.
  • It is highly unlikely that your child will be in their usual classroom
  • Children may not have their normal teacher or their normal support staff
  • The curriculum will vary and will be reduced with limited availability of resources
  • We will be staggering break times, and pick-up and drop-off times to avoid adults gathering at school
  • There will be regular supervised hand washing routines in place for pupils and hand sanitizer will be made available
  • We will increase cleaning in school before, after and during the school day.
  • We will strictly be keeping pupils and staff with coronavirus symptoms at home. If your child displays symptoms they will need to be collected from our isolation room immediately
  • We will be limiting access to the school for all parents and visitors and will prefer that all communication will be via email and telephone
Sadly, I am sure you will understand that I cannot eliminate the possibility that your child will be exposed to the virus whilst at school and I cannot guarantee that pupils will maintain a social distance from each other at all times.

We would like to thank you for your continued support in helping your child learn from home. If your child will remain at home, we will continue to support you and them with home learning. Please do continue to stay in touch with us about how your child is getting on.

Warm regards,
