Year 5 Maths
Year 5 have made a great start to thier maths lessons since returning in September. They have all developed thier understanding of Place Value and have made freat use of the manipulatives available to them.
Year 5 15 Books
Each year we have 15 books that we would like the children to read. In year 5, we have some very exciting books, which the children are enjoying. These books can also be found in the local libaries, if the children would like to join and take them out.
101 Star Jumps for Alopecia
Last week year 5, with the support of Mr Stanbridge, completed 101 Star Jumps for Alopecia awareness month. This is an important event for members of our yeargroup. Everyone throughly enjoyed themselves, whilst support a very worthy cause.

Safer Street Scheme
We are aware that signs have started to appear in the area regarding the planned change in traffic regulations. This is because the Council are introducing a Safer Schools Streets initiative which is designed to improve safety for pedestrians. At this time the school has no further information. The Council have stated that as soon as the final process is completed they will provide a letter for all parents to confirm the details. Please be assured that we will circulate any information to parents as soon as it is received. Thank you for your patience.
IMPORTANT & URGENT MESSAGE – Are you eligible for the School Holiday Meal Scheme?
This year the Mayor of London has funded school dinners for ALL primary aged children. However Havering families who have low incomes may be eligible to receive additional financial support so that their children don’t go hungry during the school holidays. You can also apply for your child to attend a holiday activity scheme. You can find out more about this from the link below but hurry because the scheme opens for new applications from Monday 25 September until Friday 6th October.

Some children / families are put off because they think that Free School Meals status means that they have to eat the school lunches. This is not true! If you prefer to bring a packed lunch, that is absolutely fine. The school dinners will be there for you should you want them… but they are not compulsory.
Who is eligible? If you are in receipt of any of the following benefits your child may be eligible for free school meals.
* Income support
* Income based Jobseekers Allowance
* Income related Employment Support Allowance
* Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit
* Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income of less than £16,190
* Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
* Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
* Universal Credit (your household income must be less than £7,400 a year after tax and not including any benefits you receive)

Holiday Requests
We have seen an increase in Leave of Absence requests for holidays. The DfE and Local Authority have made it clear that we are no longer able to grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Mead Primary School will consider each request for leave of absence carefully and individually to determine its authorisation, but please remember leave is not an entitlement. Requests should be made by the parent/carer and forwarded to the Headteacher before the period of absence. Please note that all absences of 4 days or more may require medical evidence (eg copies of prescription, hospital letters, medication, etc.). Any unauthorised periods of absence may result in a penalty notice of £60 (which will increase to £120 if not paid within 21 days) for each child and imposed on each parent.

Year 3 Place Value
Year 3 have been looking at the place value of 3-digit numbers during our maths lessons. We have used base 10 and place value counters to support our learning.
We have been representing 3-digit numbers; partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones as well as finding 1, 10 and 100 more and less of a given number.

Year 3 see the light!
In our Science lessons this half term we are learning all about light. Last week we sorted luminous and non-luminous objects and this week we moved onto investigating how light travels. First we came up with our question and then made predictions (just like real scientists). We set up our experiment, using card with holes in and torches and worked collaboratively with our partners to find out whether our predictions were correct. We really enjoyed discovering that light travels in straight lines, even when the pieces of card are moved far away from each other.
Year 1 are reading Little Red Riding Hood!
Year 1 have been reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood as part of their literacy lessons. They have thought of some exciting adjectives to describe what Little Red Riding Hood might have seen on her journey through the forest, like crunchy leaves, sticky mud and tall trees! We have also enjoyed creating wanted posters for The Wolf and playing memory games for all of the items in her basket. There are also some brilliant actors in Year 1 who loved pretending to be The Wolf and Granny! Great work Year 1!
